I'm always willing to help if you get something let me know.
I will definitatly post up what we find in the morning. I still think it has something to do with the glow plug system.
Maybe I really do just need to replace the glow plugs. They all test out fine, but you know how that goes.
And I'll state it once more in case anyone missed it. I hate throwing parts at it unless I have a very good reason to suspect them.
Diasnostics only takes time, I have that. $$$ not so much.
Update.
Barry (Mad Max) from AZPSG forum, came over for a while this morning (A huge thanks goes out to him).
We hooked up his newly updated AE and monitored a few things. Here is what we found.
The RPM is only getting to about 130 while cranking, I have to do some research but I remember seeing we need 150RPM and he was thinking the same.
HP oil pressure while cranking was over 1600 so we are good.
Voltage drops to right around 10.2, so we hooked up his truck and the starter still spins way slower than his does.
I plugged it in so we can test it later this afternoon after I can get it started to check out the GP system. In the mean time I am planning on pulling the starter and seeing if I can clean it up and get it to spin better.
I'll update again this afternoon after some more testing.
I think we are getting it narrowed down at least. HPOP is good, GP system will be checked when running and starter is spinning slow. (still checking into exchanging batteries but starter is slow even when jumped over to Barry's truck)
Mine is doing the same thing. If its below 50* out I have to plug it in or it will not start. Once its warm it is fine.
Ive cranked it when its cold until the batteries died. Recharged them, hooked them up to my other truck and killed em again. Alot of white smoke coming out the tailpipe as well.
Have you lost any fuel mileage? Mine has dropped significatly. I'm leaning towards the Injector Drive Module. I had a friends whos truck did the same thing as that was the problem.
I've only had the truck for one week so I really don't know wha the milage has been. I haven't driven it other than for a test run with Barry last night.
We had his AE hooked up and did a 6 mile loop, everything seems to be good except we're wondering about injector pulse width and it is throwing a code for #8 cylinder. The backpressure valve seems to be showing high as well but I'm going to pull it out today and see if it is plugged up.
I'm also checking into a possible weak CPS, I'm not sure if the recall has been done yet and I'm going to check into that tomorrow.
Lostman.....we should start a club of the PSD owners of Glendale whos trucks are stuck in the driveway.....
We get rain once in a couple years....real rain that is and our trucks freak out....I'd love to give you a hand, but I'm stuck with a truck I need to fix also...
Buddaha43,
I agree with that! I can get mine out of the driveway with no issues if I plug it in. The problem I have with that is that we live in such a temporate climate and I still have to use the block heater to get my truck to start. Not what I was trying to buy when I got the diesel.
What do you have going on with yours? (trying not to hi-jack my own thread by asking though)
Its your thread and you can do what you like! I posted another thread about it as to not help you hijack your own thread! I'm hoping to get mine scanned sometime today.....
I was talking to Barry last night and we got to thinking the CPS might not have been replaced so I climbed up under the truck and found a grey sensor. I guess that it was at least done once. I may still buy another one and try it just for giggles, I know I should have one in the glove box in any case so I don't feel like it is a waste of money.
It still didn't start today cold but after plugging it in for a about 5 hours it started right up without any issues. I'm so confused, everything I can figure points to the GP system. Yet maybe after warming up the block the starter spins faster and allows it to start due to the warmer oil temps.
Tomorrows I'm going to try to go the route of having the batteries replaced (if I can get autozone to warranty them even better).
How about this, and I'm just throwing it out there.....maybe not all your glowplugs are working. Maybe only 1 or 2 even.....just an idea to consider...
I would have bought into that but last night we threw a scanner on it and it passed the glow plug test. I know that could mean they still aren't completely working. I may have to throw new ones in just to make sure. I don't know what else to do at this point.
The ones in there looked brand new when I pulled out the #1 and the PO said he replaced them 60K ago.
I had a friend over again tonight to scan the computer. The only code that came up again was the p0470 exhaust pressure sensor. Two days ago I disconnected the tube going to the sensor and cleaned it out. It was fairly clean, I then blew compressed air through the line. It flowed freely and I reconnected it.
We found that cold without charging the batteries I am spinning at 135-140rpm with the starter. It tried to fire once and was spinning at 240+ but never quite started. So here is what I think I'm going to try
In order: new cam position sensor...who knows but if it doesn't work I have my spare so nothing lost there.
rebuild starter, the batteries are not dropping below 10.5Volts so I don't see a need to replace them just yet.
New glow plugs, I am going to test each one as I take them out to see if they are actually all good or bad. That should help get it taken care of.
If anyone has dealt with P0470 I'd appreciate their finding. I know I could just do a sensor but again I don't like to throw parts. I'm also going to do a search on this forum to see what I can find.
Theoretically the exhaust pressure sensor should have no bearing on whether the engine will start or not.
It should just disable your exhaust back pressure valve if it is unplugged.
