Good question. I've known folks with the Dodge V10 and never heard anything bad about them. The only thing I could ever figure was that it lived in the shadow of the 5.9 CTD so it was passed over by many. Otherwise, I always thought of it as a more than capable engine.
I was one of the lucky guys that owned a 2000 Dodge 2500 4x4 long bed V10 Triton 8.0L Laramie SRT Edition with the six speed gearbox. I put 270,000 miles on that thing pulling a 36' goose neck with my two Mustangs in the back! You would "forget" you were towing! Got a ticket once doing 70mph UP the Mogollon Rim Road in Arizona. In the YEARS I owned it I had to replace the hoses twice, but never had to repair the engine. I'd bet this truck is STILL running fine 22 years later!
It did have a way of drinking up the gasoline, but it went incredibly fast for a truck!
450 lb-ft was not all that much, true, but considering it was at 2400 RPM, that's pretty significant. Peak HP was ~310 @ 4000 RPM.
When you consider a 460 with only 500cc less displacement only made something like 230HP during the same time period, and only 390 lb-ft of torque, it is pretty impressive.
""""During the same period"""". Those guys still building Big Block Fords-make a touch more than 230.
My question when I see a V10 truck is always "How many gallons per mile".

I’ve got an F150 and a Ram parked next to each other, so I’ll personally allow it. At least the F150 took two plus decades to show hints of that 2nd Gen Ram cracked dash. I need to patch up some hairline cracks one of these weekends.
Besides, the Dodge brothers worked for good Ol’ Henry way back when, so it brings out warm fuzzies at times.
