hey guys i have a 2003 explorer 4wd and the abs light is on an was wondering where to start looking for problems? to make it go off. can you clean the wheel sensor? any ideas or experience would help. thanks
The only advise I can give is to check where the sensor wire comes out of the hub assembly to where it plugs into another wire. I just replaced a hub assembly on my 2003 Sport Trac and I did not get the wire plugged back in all the way and the ABS light came on.
Had an '04 explorer with abs light on and some other dummy light on. Just for the heck of it, decided to check battery volts/amps. Tester said to replace. Hiked it over to Napa where battery warranty is located. They tested and replaced due to bad cell.
No more dummy light since. A bad battery can be a source of many gremlins.
If you just replaced the front hub, that is a place to look... if you did not, then the mose common failure is the speed pickup on the rear axle. crawl under the truck and it is on the top of the pumpkin at the center. You take out one screw, maybe 8 mm head, then wiggle and pull out the sensor. You get a new one at Auto Zone for $50. Most common.

thanks and no i didnt change the front hub. is there any way to test the speed pickup to see if that is the problem? thanks
it has a specif resistance, but that can be checked and it still not count teeth right. they can get "weak". I took mine out, cleaned it real good. There was crud on the tip and it could not count teeth correctly. It worked for a couple months, then did it again, I took it out, cleaned, (not to dirty) worked for a week, etc.... thats how i determined it was "probabaly" the rear sensor. Only takes about 20 minutes to get it out, wash it, wipe things off and reinstall to test.
