Something Gone Wrong

I did the Hutch and Harpoon mod last weekend, and since then I have had power problems, or lack of. I have even had the truck "die" on my because of fuel starvation. I replaced the fuel filter, and the truck runs, butr I still have power problems. When I lay down next my pump, it sounds like there is air and fuel. But at the same time, it may be sounding like a restriction. Anyhow, thought I would let everyone know what I Have going on, I need to get back under there and identify the problem, but I Have a very full tank right now.

I am thinking at the moment that I have to tight of a bend from the fuel line to the existing steel line.. BUt again, I dont know. Its killing me.

Did you put a filter in line before the pump?
I'm curious to see how this turns out since my pump died the day I did these mods.
An easy check is to open the drain valve on the fuel bowl, cycle the pump, and see if it looks like the Exxon Valdez coming out of the drain tube.

I did, but removed it as soon as I Noticed problems. Pretty damn scary that your pump wnt out that day.

When I first had the problem, I removed the in line filter, I then put air into the fuel line back towards the tank. I reconnected the fuel line, opened the pet **** and cycled the pump, I Saw what I believed to be great flow ( should have had a preasure gage there) So i replaced the fuel filter in the bowl. Truck ran great for the ride home, but is now acting up again.

Pat..You might check to make sure you do not have a hose crimped/kinked on the top of the tank.I had left some extra hose on the supply and return so if I had to drop the tank again it would be close to the ground and not stretching the hoses.Turns out my return hose was kinked, this did not cause any prblems but I noticed when we had to drop the tank when we did not get the lid on right the first time.

I had done the same thing, and noticed crimps in the line first thing, I dropped and raised the tank about 3 times, Using my hand to fgeel for the crimps, doesnt mean I got them though, At lunch I plan on changin and getting under there, loosening the line that runs along the frame to see what I Can do better..

hhmmm.... Mine's been fine for about two years now. Been running the ITP kit with the cheap in-line filters. Was your tank clean when you dropped it? Mine was about spotless, and the pick-up screen was completely clean. I never looked at the screens in the mixing chamber, so I can't say what they looked like. I've been through 4 in-line filters so far, and just switched to the Napa one a month or so ago. So far so good still...

EDIT: Here's what it looks like. I don't know what that black stuff is in there, but I know right after I did the in-tank mods, I got a bad batch of fuel and it just about plugged my pre-pump filter. Looked a lot like that stuff! I hope I didn't get another bad batch.

I had left extra line as well, I to dropped the tank a couple of times trying to work kinks out, I am wondering if I missed one. At lunch I am going to change and try to see what I can do with out dropping the tank.

Otherwise this Saturday, I will doing this again .

Sorry I missed your post Joe, my pick up screen was spotless, and the tank had nothing going on in there either, I was happy to see how clean everything was.

Did you replace your dead pump with another stock pump?

This is the next mod on my list.

Pat,

Did you make sure you measured to make sure the lil pickup foot is at the same distance away from bottom of tank as it was before the mods and not too close to it hindering the pump from pumping efficiently?

IIRC it should be at least 1/4" off the bottom. I set mine at the same spot it was on the assembly before the mod, but I didn't measure the actual gap between the bottom and the fuel pick-up. I didn't think of that until AFTER I got everything back together and was driving (of course). I figure that if I start having fuel problems the first thing I'm doing is dropping the tank and measuring the gap. So far I've had no problems (2 years) and haven't had to go back in.

I spent all day doing the mod (ITP kit WITH the fuel filter) as I was measuring, re-measuring and checking everything 3-4 times as I put it together. My screen was clean and the tank only had a small amount of sediment in it, which I was pleasantly surprised with (I expected it to be nasty).

I'm sorry to hear about your issues. I can't think of anything about the mod that would cause your problems besides too small of a gap for the pick-up line in the tank and kinked or clogged lines.

Exactly 15"

I was going through my head and trying to recall every step I made, and that was one of them . For that matter, when it was acting up with a quarter tank, I thought maybe I didnt tighten the hose clamp to the pick up..

I have taken inventory of my rags about 5 times now..

Yeah it has to be that you have a kinked line, or the pickup foot is to close to the bottom of the tank. If not, I guess you then need to rig up a pressure gauge and see what pressure your pump is putting out.
