Why so many dents?

My truck has none. Yes, I know it's 31 years old...but it doesn't have any. But of course, I'm battling with rust.

It could have started life like mine. A maintenance vehicle... It has 0 rust but every panel has a dent in it somewhere. Oh well, rather have dents than rust.

Some more work on the crew.

I found the cheap nutsert tool at Menards, 9 bucks, than Buck.

First thing I did was made a template of the old nutserts.

Transferred.

Installed. When you are installing the nutsert make sure to put some oil on the threads, it makes it much easier to crimp down.

Finished.

Today I got the bed seperated.

The shiny part is 5 holes in the back of the cab I welded up.

Practically rust free for a 30 year old truck.

It must have spent nearly all of its life in Wyoming. I was born and raised there.

Much of Wyoming is dry. Big Horn is almost a desert. Yes, desert in Wyoming.

Curious - what's the DSO code on the turd?

Dang - that's rust free?

I have seen a lot worse for sure but that is a "rusty" frame here in CA...

Still - I'm sure you'll make it all purdy again!

Don't know Chad, have to get it next time I'm at the shop.

It must of been in the dry part of Wy. The body, other than dents, was literally rust free. The guy that had it in Mi. owned it for 2 years he told me.

It's all on the surface Chase, probably picked up when it lived in Mi. nothing severe at all on the frame.

Just looks a bit pitted where it was sand blasted. Frames on the trucks I have picked up are all still really smooth. Like I said though - still much better than many I have seen from back East, etc.

Um that hasn't been sandblasted Chase. The 2 dark spots on the top of the frame rail and the crossmember have been hit with an air scaler. I knocked some rust scale build up off. The rest of the rails are fine.

One of these.

Pics aren't showing up now so I can't have another look, but it looked like part of the frame was silver like it had been blasted and other part looked like the normal surface rust color.

Either way - it is what it is. If you say it's fine - then I'm sure it is.

Living in the bone-dry desert year around, the factory coating will be intact after washing the dust off.

In semi-dry climates, the coating will fall off from the seasonal changes/perception revealing bare metal. It will get some surface rusting but hardly enough to pull hair out over.

Frames that are flaking off should be worrying you enough to prevent it now!

i, being the campus redneck, am helping a guy fix the breaks on his chebby. the truck was and always has been a montana truck. the only parts of it not rusted is made of plastic or glass!! i advised him to get new drums for the rear before they crumble inside his wheel! when i hit it to knock it loose and take it off, it showered whole chunks of the cooling fins off...
