On a side note, I'm sellin my 33s. I'm going to use my 15x10 wheels on my wifes IH wheeler, and going to get some 16x10s for my DD, as 16 inch tires are a lot cheaper.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Dave I have a question about gears. I've been considering changing out my 3.55's for 4.56's and hopefully a locker for the rear. Here's where I've been looking Ford 8.8 Gears -
My questions is whats the difference between the superior and yukon gear set? Do I need anything else besides the ring and pinion set for the gear change? I noticed some say reversed, whats this used for?
Where can you find a reasonable priced locker? I want to start some repairs on this truck and figured it would be a good time to switch out a few things. Any other recommendations of what I should do are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ryan
When you do the rear gears, I would recommend a major rebuild kit for it too, I think I got mine for $108 includes all bearings, (wheel, carrier, and pinion bearings, and wheel, and pinion seals, along with a diff cover gasket and shims for the carrier). As for a cheap locker, the aussie locker is a good one to get, my little brother had one before I got mine and we both have had good luck with them. You will need a hardened crosspin for it, and wilklk have to grind a tooth or two down a bit on the ring gear to get it in there(not a big deal at all).
As for the reverse rotation, that is a high pinion axle, the front. They have been used in the front of Ford half tons sense around 76. You can get away with just a gear set for the front axle. (If your careful removing bearings) when I put the gears in mine, I think it cost around $500. I used USA standard gears in one end and Motives in the other. They where the cheapest gears I could find, and they are quality stuff. When I get to a computer later today I'll post up some links and some more info.
Easy to learn.
8.8 rebuild kit.
8.8 inch Rear Axle Super Rebuild Kit
8.8 gears. The notched crosspin is not needed if installing a Aussie or Powertrax Locker.
Ford 8.8" Motive Gear Ring and Pinion, 4.56 ratio
Here are the front D44 gears.
USA Standard Gear Ring And Pinion, Reverse Rotation 4.56
But, I forgot to mention this earlier, you NEED a different carrier for the front in order to run the 4.56s. This one is cheap, just have to swap ur spider gears and crosspin into it. They do have a loaded one too if yours are shot.
D44 Open carrier case only, 3.93 - 5.38
Do you know of a reasonable place to purchase a aussie locker? I can't seem to find them at bronco grave yard?
I guess what I'd be planning on doing is:
All 5 u joints on the front
all 4 ball joints front
Might replace radius arm bushings
All new wheel bearings front
New tie rods and flip the tie rods
new super flex front coils ( maybe )
4.56 front
d44 carrier
4.56 rear
rear rebuild kit
And some sort of locker for the rear.
can you think of anything else to do since I'll be in there? I really don't want to tear into it again unless it breaks. haha
Ford 8.8" Detroit True-Trac, 31 Spline
What do you use up front to adjust your camber? Do I need to add something or is there a stock way to adjust it?
