They are easy as pie to build, but easy as pie to screw up too haha.
Last I heard Hp/compaq was pretty high up there in quality. (I dont keep up with the computer stuff like i used to though)
I had an ex with a dell, and granted that was awhile ago now, but it was a POS. That computer alone got me to never buy a dell!
Ed go talk to Don and Sean over in the New England section. They both work on computers for a living. Sean seems to be on a mini-vacation today though.
I have a Toshiba Lap top with more bell's and whistle's than I know what to do with. Ed, I think it is what you get use to. Good Luck on finding you one.
I have an acer laptop, and I have been pretty impressed with it. Ive taken it everywhere when I was working up north, and it took a beating and still works!
Acer isnt a top quality brand either!
I have a 17 inch HP laptop with 4 gb ram and $250 gb hard drive and dvd writer...spent about $800 on it last year...I got a base unit used for $100 (comes with keyboard and mouse) and its better than any dsktop I ever had before!
I did the gateway thing 10 years back or so and when we maxed it out and tried to upgrade it for more ram and Memory that turned out to be a dead end and we had to buy another puter.

10 years ago, computers were dinosaurs.
a cheap desktop bought today is 1,000 times better than a high-end computer of 10 years ago.
and costs about 1/8 the price.
One thing people do that slows their computer down is this:
They think the computer is getting slower. They assume it is a virus and download a crapload of anti-virus, anti-spyware, several firewalls, etc.
What ends up happening is all those programs running on there slows the computer down even more. Then they think "OH MAN I MUST REALLY HAVE A BAD VIRUS" and download even more stuff slowing the computer down even more.
Half the time there is nothing wrong with the computer except all the programs checking and fighting with each other. And that is what slows the computer down.
I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've seen this happen to people.
And the worst part is they use programs like Norton anti-virus which is in and of itself a virus! Don't believe me? Ever tried uninstalling one of those stupid programs?
I use Avast! anti-virus. It is 100% free for the home version and when I ran Norton and Avast! on the same computer Avast! caught 22 viruses Norton missed.
I need to buy a new Home computer, any recommendations? Dell? OVC? have one built? Apple?
ideas?
budget $1500

Ed, they were running Dells on QVC today. They had laptops but they've also had a desktop recently. Go on their website and have a look. The laptops were 4GB Ram and 320GB hard drives and pretty well loaded up for under $1k. I think the desktops were in that range too and they are all-in-ones were the tower, etc. is all integrated. In fact, there's one on QVC now...desktop.
