So,, for an OT in the OT.. What would it take for this group to think about supplying themselves before a storm??

I believe my magic number would be better then 30".. My reason, I have a meijers about a mile away, they are a 24 hour store, and would be with in walking, or even driving distance, if the snow was that bad, employees would be stuck there anyway.

My needs will be limitted, we have a gas oven, we have the ol hurican latterns, as well as colman.. I have 2 Mr heaters . Food, we normally have about a week and half stock anyways.. We are on city water.. If it gets real bad, I have enough firepower I can go pillaging from the neighbors

For me? About 2'-3'. I've had my PSD through 4' before, no joke...but when you get that much snow, employees can't get to work and 99% of the stores can't open....so even if you can get around your SOL.

I remember one time back in Denver, I had my older sister and her family living with me in my house for a while. We got about 2' of snow and my little niece got a cold and my sister needed Children's Motrin to get her fever to go down. I sloshed my truck through several feet of snow to 5 different grocery stores before I finally found one that was open, all the way across town.

There was also a rockin blizzard when I was in college up in Fort Collins...3-3.5' depending on drifts. I had my old Toyota pickup at the time, slapped the chains on that baby and loaded my neighbors up in the bed and we all went grocery shopping.

 

hey y'all. for snow to stop me it would take about 5' to stop us since we have a big 270hp 4x4 tractor with a 12' snow blade on it. if we could make it to the shed atleast.

 

I've lived through foot plus snow here in Arkansas a couple of times. After 2-3 days things were starting to return to normal...well back to our definition of "normal". We've usually got a weeks worth of groceries here at the house...the only thing we seem to go through in mass amounts is milk. Everything else is either frozen in the deep freeze or can/dry goods. With both gas & electric to the house we're good to go, though things take longer without the electricity...no nuker to reheat leftovers, showers are fun by candle/MAG light and worse of all....NO INTERNET The HVAC is gas fired...but of course need the juice to run the blower. We live in the city so water/sewer isn't an issue...though I reckon if it got cold enough things could get interesting. But I've never seen it that cold here in town. The longest we've gone without power was around Christmas '00 when we had an ice storm. We were without power for 8 hours, pretty much everyone in town had lost power had it back within 12 hours; there was folks in rual OK/AR that were out of power for 2-3 weeks.

The house I'd like to build would have not only a 30' by 50' shop (detached from the house)...but a diesel generator to power both the house & shop. If Ed McMahon would ever send that check he keeps telling me I've got coming...I could start construction real soon.

 

since i always keep at least a months worth of food in the freezer, it would have to be like 10-12 feet to get me to go shopping.

i have 2 propane colman lanterns and 2 cases of propane tanks for light, gas heat and cooking, city water and sewer, and 4 kerosene heaters,and a welder/generator for in case the power goes out. about the only thing i would have to buy is kerosene for the heaters, and gas for the welder.

 

all it took back in 96 was 24" of snow for our governor to declare a state of emergency to make leaving your house illegal for 2 days, except for emergency personnel.

 

I wonder how much snow it would take wisconsin to declare a state of emergency.

 

no amount of snow keeps me home as i am that emergengy personnel ... so thats my answer
althought when i wasnt working for family i would always stock up on whiskey and mt dew before a storm

 

a full liquor cabinet is a mandatory given.....

 

I tell ya, when the snow is up to your chest, you get intimidated for a few minutes...but then you get over it.

Mt. Dew and whiskey, mixed together? Or seperate?

I wouldnt really stock up on anything before a storm, mainly because we have enough food and whatnot in the house to last a few weeks all the time. I have a gas tank out here, and a slip tank with diesel in it, and IF I needed wood for a fire or cooking, or diesel to start a fire, or throw in my truck, or better yet my 4x4 backhoe, I would be able to drive pretty much anywhere I wanted. I have ways to get vehicles and equipment started in the cold, plus I have synthetic oil in the stuff that runs in the winter.

At worst it would be a 40 km drive to get to the complete outer most opposite side of the city, with a backhoe. And if they didnt have supplies, well then I would have to go shoot a deer for food or something haha.
