I'll lick windows if they taste good.

I like carpentry, I'm pretty good at it, I just have a lot to learn. My first house was a BIG learning experience. My next one, I want to do things the RIGHT way.

I agree completely! My mother always used to tell me to stop playing in the rain, the snow, blah blah blah. Yea, in the snow I might get a runny nose or something, but never got sick. Ive never had the flu(knock on wood). I'm not OCD, but I wash my hands more than most people just because the business I'm in and keep my distance from people with colds.

Lisa... the cutting and installing is not bad. Racking out teh floor is the real trick so that you avoid hving end-to-end joints on one row not landing at end-to-end joints for at least 3-4 more rows of flooring. The piece left over from trimming one end is what I use to start the next row (unless it creates the kind of joint-mapping I want to avoid.

One tip... do NOT use staples or stright nails... use only "cleated" nails because they won't back out over time nearly like any of the other options will. ALso, if you put the floors down, just purchase yourself a brand new Porter Cable flooring nailer, and when you're done, you can seel it off on eBay for about 85-95% of your purchase price, and that makes for a really cheap "rental" approach.

The best source I've found for hardwood flooring (real tongue and groove solid stuff like you're wanting) is through Lumber Liquidators. With them, you can typically get one notch higher grade wood than anywhere else and for the same price as the lower grade from elsewhere.

Another thing... even if you put the floors in yourself... pay someone else to sand and finish them. That large sanding equipment has tossed my 275-lb frame around like I was a toy, and it could leave someone as small as you spinning or dragging like a tin can on a chain behind a dragster at the end of a quarter mile race.

One last tip... reasearch your finish options thoroughly, and go with only a professional gymnasium/showroom floor type finish for the best durability... none of that lesser quality Spar stuff from Home Depot or Lowes.

I know you didn't need all that... I was just reminiscing over my own flooring work activities and my memory got the better of me.

BTW... make sure you get to a doctor.

Haha...could be kinda fun, like riding a bull or something.

My brother and I rented a full size 2-man chisel jackhammer once to break up a bunch of post concrete in a really tight space...very awkward and we had to do it with me on one side, him on the other and I got squeezed up against a fence. He called me instead of one of his friends because he said I "could handle it". My arms felt like they were vibrating for a few days.

Thanks for the advice. How's the new job? got any oil coupons? Good buddy discount?

the only time I ever used 2 men on a jackhammer was when we were going sideways thru a wall...

we tied a rope to support the weight and I ran the jackhammer and another guy would help line up the chisel if it dropped out of the hole
