It varies state to state, Ed, but I know in VA that if you have an established right of way/easement, the one way used most is to abandon the use of it. It passes on with the land, not just the owner(90% of the time). There are a few other ways to terminate it, but this happens the most often around here. The courts like to have a time period of how long it was abandoned and if its reasonable then they terminate it. There are like 10 other ways to do it but, they almost all will end up in court somehow. Just make sure theres no expiration of the easement in any paperwork you sign!
