I recently put in a SMF flywheel kit and clutch. But it makes a terrible noise when taking off in 1st or reverse and when the clutch is about halfway out when shifting on the road. The noise when taking off is so bad that parked the truck. I did notice that the clutch fork (I put in a new one of those along with a new release bearing and thrust bearing) is moving significantly when at idle.
Has anyone had any experience with this and is there something that a weekend mechanic (me) could have done to cause this. I.e. is there something I should check?
Truck is as in signature and with 182,000 miles.
If the SMF just won't work with my truck, where is the best price for a DMF?
I actually just put a SMF in my truck as well, and had the same question. I don't think it is anything you did, the noise that you hear is what most people call gear rollover or some call it idle clatter. It is a result of stronger torsional springs in the clutch disc, as well as just the way the SMF works compaired to the DMF. Ford designed the DMF to get rid of all this noise and it worked great, but the DMF doesn't last very long and run about $900 to $1000 to replace, and that doesnt include the clutch.
If you take apart the DMF you can see all these little plastic and rubber pieces and springs. Here is a write up I did on it, and it has a link to pictures of the DMF and what the guts look like.
Thanks NewRed.
I can take the growling in the gears, but I can't take the noise it makes taking off in first or reverse or the vibration when shifting. It is unbearable. I had an 87 F-250 and replaced the DMF at about 90,000 and it was still fine when I sold the truck at 250,000. That truck was worked hard pulling and mudding on farms too.
I have put about 300 miles on the clutch. The noise almst sounds like the clutch fork rattling on the release bearing. The noises are too much for me so I parked it.
I am not going to say what brand clutch it is because the guy told me it would be noisy, so I was expecting gear growls. I called their support group and they basically said about 5% of the trucks do that. So I am stuck with an expensive doorstop.
Some guy on Ebay has DMFs for 675.00 delivered, but the economy downturn has made my company put me on about 20 hours a week, so I guess it will just sit till the money situation turns around.
It sounds like your clutch fork could be part of your problem. Check it out and see if you can figure out what is wrong. I put in a SMF and clutch about 12000 miles ago and love it. I do get a little growling in the gears especially when letting off the throttle, but nothing when taking off or shifting.

I am thinking along those lines. I put in a new clutch fork because some on the forum recommended it. The old fork wasn't worn badly. Today I noticed that the steel in the new fork is not nearly as heavy as the original, so I think I will give that a try.
My only concern is that the rattling may be coming from the fork vibrating on the release bearing.
I wish I could record the sound of it in when taking off. It is loud enough that everyone around the truck will turn and look, but I get no sounds when working the clutch in and out in neutral.
The noises that concern me don't even resemble a growl.
I have a dmf in my truck and looking to get a smf. if a new clutch fork doesnt help maybe we could possibly work out some kind of trade so you can get back on the road and not lose money on a new one.
I don't deal with noise well. These trucks are noisy enough juist with the engine and cab design. And, in hindsight, since I never plan to make a lot of horsepower, I never needed the SMF to begin with. It was just cheaper and everyone seemed to love them.
