After reading this thread I was a bit worried. I didn't think to actually check the door sticker before I purchased. Who does? (Well, me now.) Luckily my truck has 1377 lbs payload.

It's an 09 F150 Screw XLT, 2WD, 6.5 ft bed, 4.6 3V, chrome and tow pkgs, access steps with 18" wheels.

While it's not 1500 lbs, it's right about what I thought it should be. My thought was Ford Massive Payload - full passenger compartment - regular bed size = 1300 lbs.

This thread really has been over for a while, but...

I was just reading the news release on the new Ford Transit Connect, the little FWD Euro van with a 4 cylinder engine. A quote in the press release reads:

"It also offers commercial users a cargo payload of 1,600 pounds – a larger payload than the full size Dodge Ram 1500 standard-cab short-box pickup truck."

Ummm, wonder why they didn't mention that the payload is also 70% greater than an '09 F150 with the proper equipment?

Wonder how long the Transit Connect would last carrying something approaching the max payload most of the time?

George

You know, one thing i have often pondered on is why the US trucks are so low on payload. I have read this thread regularly and am amased to hear F150's strugling to reach 1500lbs. Someone kindly pointed out that it is because they are so heavy wich kind of explains some of it, but i would have thought they would be built to compensate for it.
To try and answer how long the transit could last carrying 1600lbs, well if going on payloads offerred on "european" pickups for egg Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Toy Hilux etc, they are all rated to carry atleast 1000kg some times well over 1300kg. And i can attest they do it regularly, year in year out. Here in Africa they offcourse gets abused and i regularly see 'em overloaded with a heaped loadbin of sand and 4 or five workers on top of it. Guess they are built differently.

It's also been well pointed out on this thread t hat the US automakers are building heavy duty limos instead of real pick-ups. The good thing about the F-150 line-up is that with some indepth research you can spec out a real work truck that will get it all done or, you can have a nice cushy truck that will still get it all done.

I looked at our sticker yesterday, it was 1600 and some lbs (1640 maybe) for payload.

We have a standard cab 2wd STX model. 18" wheels. The GVW sticker said 6400lbs.

ford guide to calculate payload

Got a note back from Ford engineer today. There is a way to see and calculate your actual payload based on the options you have selected.

Its called esourcebook. Apparently its only available for dealers to log into through the dealer connection web site.

BSIMMMER, if you go back to your dealer, they should be able to break down all your options and their corresponding weights to show you how they arrived at 900lbs payload for your truck.

That would be a handy tool for people to use befre they buy the truck they are looking at. Im ok with 900lb payload as it's only ever me in the truck 99% of the time. Sometimes me and my wife but when she's in it i dont tow me trailer. But Ford shouldnt be advertiseing unreal figures for payload on certain models. The dealers should make it clear to people what their max payload would be as built.

Agreed. The irony is this document used to be available to the public. However, they moved it because they were apparently worried the public wouldnt understand all the terminology. Based on my experience, its unlikely the dealer sales staff know about this doc or how to use it.

Perhaps someone can get access and scan the relevant pages. It would be nice to have posted on this website.

This does amaze me also! as they are selling expensive products. Walk into any high end AV sales company and the guys will know almost everything you could want to know about the products they sell. Car sales should be the same. They have a small range of products to lean about and they cant even tell you if your truck comes in a certain color without looking on some paper work.

10 years ago i had a job in a electrical outlet in England and we sold over 2000 different products. I could tell you what spin, load, energy consumption, colors, wash cycles, construction, warranty, Functions and what ever else you needed to know about a washing machine then i would be just as capable with TV's and Audio products vacuums, Dishwashers, Ovens and what ever other electrical items you could think off. But i was into what i was selling and clued up to the the latest on offer. Most of these salesman couldn't careless if they were selling beds, Toilets or carpet's as it's just a job in their eyes. My dealer couldnt even figure out how the capless filler worked!!
