payload question

Just back from checking out the 09 F150's at the Dallas Auto show.

The door sticker on a 157" wb KR 4x4 said do not exceed 932 lbs (if i recall correctly) of people and cargo.

The door sticker on a 145" wb platinum said 1300 something lbs

What drives the payload rating? These numbers don't match the figures posted on the ford website.

I spotted the same thing a couple of days ago. My platinum says 1500lb payload but it seems that if you have the standard wheels the payload drops to 900lbs. I was told by Ford that the tires and wheels were the reason and if i had the 18's with the higher load tires it would have been 1500lbs. It would be nice to know if this is true or not.
The crazy thing is if i have 5 people in my truck i will more than likley be over weight lol

900lbs of payload?? I thought that the all new F150 was supposed to be the payload king of trucks? What does a guy have to do to get the highly touted 3300 payload?

You have to be very carefull when you build it as missing an option or picking the wrong wheels can drop your payload a lot. I never get anywhere near the 900lb payload so it aint a big deal for me but i would be pissed if i bought a truck and it said 1500lb on line then got it home and it says 900lb on the door sticker.

my expy

After posting the original question about payload, I went out and checked the wife's 08 4x2 Expy (with factory 20's).

It says its good to 1500 and something lbs.

Hmmm. 09 F150 KR 900 lb payload. 08 Expy 1500lb payload.

That doesn't make any sense.

Strongest frame - check
3 inch wide rear springs - check
Best in class payload - Dooh!

it's the rims/tires

the bigger the rims, the lower your payload

the "P" rated rubber also kills your payload capacity.

for the optimal payload, you need 17" rims with LT tires, load range D/E

Where is ranger93 when we need him. He could magically make that truck haul 3000lbs no problem!!!

Exactly. The F-150 reg cab 4x2 with 17" steel wheels has a 3030 lb payload when properly equipped. Add in Screw or Scab and 4x4 to the mix and the payload drops dynamically.

So, the guy cruising in a 4x4 King Ranch with 20's and a 6.5' box doesn't have much of a work truck if payload is your primary concern. It a great truck but you have to pay attention to the fine print.

Is a shame that You can't get a decent looking Wheel for the Heavy Payload package.

Ford limits You to their fugly steelies. The Alcoa's on My F250 weigh less, rated to 12Klbs each, and look waaaay better than Ford's steelies. I' gladly settle for the 17" wheel size, IF the wheels weren't so damned ugly.

It still doesn't make sense. I know the wheels will certainly play a big role in the permitted payload and towing but as dbosman said his Expy has the 20's with probably pirelli and he's getting 1500+. I also have an 08 Expy 4x4 with the same tire and mine is listed as 1557Lbs. Why would a F150 with these same tires or like only permit 900Lbs.

The one thing I noticed is my sticker shows 708Kg and 1557Lbs. I don't suppose one could be seeing 900Kg and not 900Lbs on the F150 sticker?

Post that sticker up of yours so that we can see what details are on your tires rateing sticker so we can work this out. Im amazed that mine is only 900lbs. I will go take a pic of mine.

Just for confirmation i just built my truck on line and it came up with 1500lb payload capacity and 9600lb towing. Just to be sure i spoke with my mate at the dealership and he came back with the exact numbers as i have. Something dont add up here.

Weird, Seems the wheels and tires are the same on Both trucks. Yet a 600 lb load difference?

My 6.5'box screw lists 1086lbs payload on the door. 18" wheels. its seems that the wheels and tires are the major factor here. why else would the sticker say "tire and loading information". (the expy also lists 7900lb GVWR. and 4250lb Rear gawr. interesting.maybe irs is the way to go.) anyone know the curb weight difference between the expy and the 150.
