Part V
I'm shocked and saddened to see your dad is in ICU. I will send as much positive mojo your way that I can.
An advice from a friend: go get on a plane, and go see your family...if you aren't planning to do so already. I know of a really good doggie daycare in Englewood if you are unable to find a sitter for the pups.
I know it'd help but I'm not sure how I'll sneak in a 95lb Akita to the ICU....
I'm not a religious person at all, but if you could send some good thoughts out for my Dad, I'd really appreciate it. About 2 years ago he had a stroke that slowed him down a bit and affected his short-term memory. All was good until Saturday evening... long story short, he had a seizure and another stroke and is currently in a coma in the ICU at University of Maryland Hospital. We have to wait a couple days to see how it works out, and I know just how tough that man is, but ..... anyway, I'm not normally one to share something like this, but I need to get it out, and any good mojo would be so incredibly appreciated.
I'm heading out the door now, I'll check in later today after meetings.
Ok so I have a story for all of you.
Most of you are aware that I am going to go back to school, get my Masters. Well, I was getting ready to start classes on Wednesday, but getting irritated because 1) I still have no books and 2) I can't get anyone to call me back.
So I start doing research on the school, which in reality is something I should have done thoroughly before I enrolled. However, the only reason I was initially became interested was because this particular school, Kaplan, was the only school to offer the Fast Track program for people interested in pursing a career in teaching. So I started talking to an advisor, got enrolled, and I was "informed" that the Fast Track program was not being offered this term because of lack of interest in the program. So, here I am en-route for the Masters program with this school. No one is calling me back, I can't get any questions answered.
What I found in my research of the school was horrifying. Absolutely, utterly horrifying. Check this out: Ripoff Report Search Results: Kaplan University!
The school has complains against them with the BBB, and students and professors are getting together to file a class action lawsuit against Kaplan for various reasons. The #1 complaint is that the school steals money, both from students and from the U.S. Dept. of Education.
I don't want anything to do with an institution that has that kind of track record. I had such a pleasant experience with my undergrad at Colorado State, I didn't even think to look into this kind of stuff. I have stopped my loans from going through my lender, and I have taken the school code off my FAFSA, they cannot touch my funding. I sent out emails last night and I have left a message with my "advisor" to see if I can get unenrolled today. I have a feeling I am in for a fight.
In other news, I am going to enroll myself in the Graduate School at the University of Iowa for the summer term, they have a very good education program. Hopefully I qualify for in-state tuition.

That is too messed up Lisa. Keep going at them. I wish that there was something that we could do to help you out. The only thing that I can think of is for all of us to flood his email with the same message...

Sad thing was our new hospital is literally 1 minute ride behind that Subway...they were some good shots....oh, and the walmart comment from above...walmart is basically right across the street from where this happened...
They now allow you to conceal carry in state parks and they are even considering letting concealed carry in places that serve alcohol on premises as long as you inform a member of the staff that you have one, which makes no sense to me. Either way its a step Id never thought Id even hear about. Of course you cant drink when you are in there so I dont plan on bringing mine! Smoking ban on the other hand is going to kill business here, especially with Phillip Morris(Altria) HQed here in Richmond...
VA doesnt differentiate between a restaurant and bars so it hurts everyone unless you can fork over the money to have a seperate ventilation system, room, and entrance for people that do or dont smoke...
Sorry for the rant...I know a few local business owners that might go outta business because of that ban...

On another note, did you take the job you had the interview for last weekend?
I think I am going to type a quick letter to the school, send it to my advisor and make her sign for it, stating I need to withdraw before the start of classes. That way , if they try and charge me with anything, I have a signed receipt of a letter stating my decision to leave the school.
I am disappointed in myself that I let this happen. I am smarter than this.
Its ok Jay. Actually I am relieved I caught all this before I started classes, and I really do like the idea of going to a state university again. I LOVED college at CSU. It was a fantastic school and from what I have seen U of I looks very comperable.
