Brendan -

I'm shocked and saddened to see your dad is in ICU. I will send as much positive mojo your way that I can.

An advice from a friend: go get on a plane, and go see your family...if you aren't planning to do so already. I know of a really good doggie daycare in Englewood if you are unable to find a sitter for the pups.

Thanks Lisa & Sheldon. He's tough, no doubt of that. After the first stroke he went in for a physical & the nurse starts with taking his blood pressure.... she takes the cuff off his arm, puts it on herself, and then re-checks my Dad.... in case you don't know, "normal" is 120/80... high is like 180/120.... he tested at 220/180!!! When the nurse explained this to him my Mom nearly fell over but he said something like "I've always been above average. Don't you know I'm Superman?" with this big corny grin...

I know it'd help but I'm not sure how I'll sneak in a 95lb Akita to the ICU....

I'm so sorry to hear this Brendan. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. If you need to talk or vent don't hesitate to give me a call. I mean that. We are all here for you!!

Brendan - if he's tough, he won't go down easily. I'm sure seeing you would brighten up his day too.

Ok so I have a story for all of you.

Most of you are aware that I am going to go back to school, get my Masters. Well, I was getting ready to start classes on Wednesday, but getting irritated because 1) I still have no books and 2) I can't get anyone to call me back.

So I start doing research on the school, which in reality is something I should have done thoroughly before I enrolled. However, the only reason I was initially became interested was because this particular school, Kaplan, was the only school to offer the Fast Track program for people interested in pursing a career in teaching. So I started talking to an advisor, got enrolled, and I was "informed" that the Fast Track program was not being offered this term because of lack of interest in the program. So, here I am en-route for the Masters program with this school. No one is calling me back, I can't get any questions answered.

What I found in my research of the school was horrifying. Absolutely, utterly horrifying. Check this out: Ripoff Report Search Results: Kaplan University!

The school has complains against them with the BBB, and students and professors are getting together to file a class action lawsuit against Kaplan for various reasons. The #1 complaint is that the school steals money, both from students and from the U.S. Dept. of Education.

I don't want anything to do with an institution that has that kind of track record. I had such a pleasant experience with my undergrad at Colorado State, I didn't even think to look into this kind of stuff. I have stopped my loans from going through my lender, and I have taken the school code off my FAFSA, they cannot touch my funding. I sent out emails last night and I have left a message with my "advisor" to see if I can get unenrolled today. I have a feeling I am in for a fight.

In other news, I am going to enroll myself in the Graduate School at the University of Iowa for the summer term, they have a very good education program. Hopefully I qualify for in-state tuition.

They now allow you to conceal carry in state parks and they are even considering letting concealed carry in places that serve alcohol on premises as long as you inform a member of the staff that you have one, which makes no sense to me. Either way its a step Id never thought Id even hear about. Of course you cant drink when you are in there so I dont plan on bringing mine! Smoking ban on the other hand is going to kill business here, especially with Phillip Morris(Altria) HQed here in Richmond...
VA doesnt differentiate between a restaurant and bars so it hurts everyone unless you can fork over the money to have a seperate ventilation system, room, and entrance for people that do or dont smoke...

Sorry for the rant...I know a few local business owners that might go outta business because of that ban...
They worried about that here too. With no other convenient places to go there was no problem after all. They are still pretty busy. So much nicer for the non-smokers too!

WOW, I am glad you found all this out before you started classes. I know with the school I went to you could get all your money back if you dropped before you started classes, once you started it was like pulling teeth to get your money back and stop your loans from going through. Hopefully you won't have too much of a fight on your hands with this school. Let us know how things turn out for you.

On another note, did you take the job you had the interview for last weekend?

I'm smarter than the average student. According to the complaints, many students realized the mistake they had made and tried to withdraw from classes before they started. They failed to do what I did - that is, shut off funding - and the school quick went in and claimed money from the lender. They would then tell the students they had to access their online classes to withdraw. When a student did that, he/she "officially" attended class and Kaplan therefore had the right to the tuition, at least a percentage of it. Advisors would wait until after cutoff dates to call students back about withdrawing from classes....OR, students would be unable to contact anyone. As it stands, I left a message from my advisor hours ago. Still waiting for a call back. I sent emails off too.

I think I am going to type a quick letter to the school, send it to my advisor and make her sign for it, stating I need to withdraw before the start of classes. That way , if they try and charge me with anything, I have a signed receipt of a letter stating my decision to leave the school.

I am disappointed in myself that I let this happen. I am smarter than this.

Its ok Jay. Actually I am relieved I caught all this before I started classes, and I really do like the idea of going to a state university again. I LOVED college at CSU. It was a fantastic school and from what I have seen U of I looks very comperable.
