Ok, i have a newly acquired 78 chevy 2500 k series. It was my grandfathers and somehow i volunteered to buy it....... well, long story short, the tranny wont shift.
its a turbo 350 (im pretty sure) and it will drive in first and reverse just fine (so that band works correctly) but it wants to kill the motor when it shifts to second. I changed the filter and oil, added lucus and drove it around and it never got better. All of the valves were moving that i could see when i had the pan off and the little jesus clip was still in place.
ideas? if not, where is a good place to buy a reasonable turbo trans?
i was wondering if the kickdown was stuck engaged, but that wouldnt explain manual second not working........ so i am out of ideas other than a clutch pack being burnt up
It sounds like there is something stuck in the higher gears that is locked up and killing the engine. If it was the converter, I would think it would also do it in low and reverse.
A clutch pack is brobly fried by now but that's not what caused the problem i don't think. It sounds to me like to many clutches are being applied at the same time. you could tear it down and diagnose it but without a real good understanding of the tranny your kinda just guessing. I think right now your best bet is to either have it rebuild (or at least diagnosed by a tranny shop) or go the reman route.
As far as prices, your gonna have to do a little shopping and find out what you can do. Jasper makes so really good products but they are slightly higher in price than others but well worth the money. Just make sure you buy from a reputable source with a good warranty, alot of the time a tranny won't show problems until a year or so down the road.
Matt or Duane, is the tranny a turbo 350 or a 400 in a 3/4 ton truck? It shouldn't be to hard to find a used one for a $100 bucks or less I would think. Shoot some night we could go over to Curtis's house and get one for free with a transfer case attached. LOL
Got a turbo 350 with an np203 transfer case attached I'd give away if somebody wants to come get it. T-case doesn't work for unknown reason, but the tranny shifts fine.
Honestly, it's just taking up space in a buddy's garage and he's going to be selling the house in the upcoming months. There's no need to pay, it's enough that I don't have to move the heavy sob to a new location when he sells the place.
lmao, i have a cousin in wichita. email me and i will get him to meet you. i need to get to wichita, but i really doubt i make it in the next couple weeks.
