EDIT:

Test results found under "Introduction" on right side of page.
In 2wd trim, the Flex gets 17/24, unsurpassed by any full-size 3-row crossover. Traverse matches it thanks to DI.

Also note the observed fuel economy:
Traverse - 18
Flex - 20
Pilot - 20 (mid-size)
Veracruz - 18 (mid-size)
CX-9 - 19
Highlanger -21 (mid-size)

So again, I ask you, please name a full-size 3 row crossover that gets better mileage than the Flex.

I can clearly see how you can say the Flex surpasses everyone in the mpg department.........

Why the comparison with "full size crossovers?" For example in this test, the Flex isn't the largest.

BTW, the Highlander Hybrid gets 27 city/25 hwy. Yes, it is a Hybrid and you can buy one with a 3rd row right now.

Can you? Really? I'm shocked you can see the truth for once...

Because that is the class the vehicle competes in. The Flex was the 2nd largest vehicle in the test, BTW. Go sit in the 3rd row of a Highlander sometime...

Since we can compare vehicles across classes, the Escape Hybrid blows that out of the water.

Do you have a point? Ever?

Your right, wrong comparison. What are the wind tunnel #'s for the Dodge minivan? What kind of mileage do they get? You can put a sheet of plywood in the back, and they have a large third row, that would make it direct competition then wouldn't it?

I thought this thread was about the F-150 and not the Flex.

Yes.. enough about the next minivan for the masses already, lets get back to talking about rolling livingrooms with half a pickup bed attached.

The bottom line is.. the reason 1/2 ton pickups have evolved into what we see now is because every soccer mom and her dog is driving a pickup instead of a car partially because you don't actually have to buy the thing they just lease it. Those of use that want a personal use pickup can't even buy something reasonable anymore because the dealers won't carry anything that doesn't have 4 doors and a DVD player. This has gone on so long the manufacturers now think(based on sales numbers) that they don't really need to offer a manual transmission or anything else manual for that matter, and trim levels start at what was considered loaded only a generation or 2 ago. We're presently seeing a drop in fuel prices but that's not going to last, if the manufacturers want to keep selling trucks there is going to have to be significant improvement in fuel consumpion, and that means these trucks have to get lighter.. not heavier. They're gonna be forced into it 1 way or another, via consumer demand driven by fuel prices or a mandated streamlining of models by creditors during restructuring. It doesn't make sense to offer 2 pickup lines with so much overlap, just like it doesn't make sense to have seperate GMC and Chevy models when both trucks come down the same assembly line. I can see the current F150 going away completely and replaced with a midsize model(F100), and if you want to haul big loads you get to buy a Superduty.

Look in llive in central texas are weather changes every day like today its in the upper 40's yesterday it was in the mid 70's i dont have seat cooling or heated seats, i dont need that crap i dont need cruse control or tilt steering, thats why i got an XL For 13,900,

Make the F-150 smaller lighter curbweight 4500,4800 you can get better MPG Out uf a 5.4 (City) driving not HWY, if the chassis was lighter its not "Rocket Science.

And why would i spend 35+ Grand on a new 1/2 ton when restoring my 13 year old is cost effective, Total restoration so far just under $6,400, when the motor dies time to order a crate.

Bring back a real full size work truck remember with a bench seat

Considering the cost of the fully equipped Flex, Edge, Expy and a few others, the F-150 is a great deal. The F-150 can be all things to all people except good on gas. Buy a cap for the back or a hard tonneau cover and your in business. I would never use my Expy like a truck, but I would use my truck like a family car. This is where a nicely equipped F-100 could bridge the gap.
Affordable, durable and parking lot friendly due to it's smaller size.

Conanski, have you even looked?

I see ads in the papers every week trying to sell F150s at $13,000. Regular cab, XL trucks. Isn't that what you want?

You can buy an F150 from an MSRP of $22k to over $45k....options and packages for nearly everyone...who says it's nothing but a luxury truck?

I'm convinced its people who really want platinums and lariats that can't afford them that continue to throw fits about trucks being taken in the wrong direction.....because your right....there are still plenty of xl trucks available....they just don't want to drive an xl while others are driving lariats...

It's funny you say that, it's the truth. I think the xl trucks from 1980-1986 were the best looking xl trucks. I had an '86 F-150 4x4 XL with chrome and two tone paint. The truck was beautiful. My '88 XLT has basically the same attributes as the '86. I would'nt own a current generation XL truck, too plain. Same goes for the STX. I want something that looks nice and I'm willing to pay for it.
