Funny, this performance thread is on it's 4th page and as I was getting ready to log on, my new Truck trend came in the mail.

They did a shoot out like PM did but used a different track and had some different testing criteria.

Long story short, the Ford came to the test with the 5.4L and 3.73 axle. The GM twins came with the 6.2L and 3.42 axle. the Nissan, Toy and Dodge came with the usual.

The only truck that significantly outperformed the Ford was the 6.2L GM. The Ford achieved the best overall MPG's and performed nearly as well as the others in all categories.

Read the article, make your own conclusions, I'm satisfied with the 5.4L and the fact that the F-150 is the best overall truck.

Great comment.

ford is most def the king of trucks if u want to race buy the kotr500 mustang ))) if u want a good work truck (which is where ford makes money selling to companies as sork trucks) that can tow and haul a few guys and still ride nice and get good mpg while being stylish get a ford

Once again with the drag racing comments. How else can they make quantitive measurements and convey them in print?

I still don't see how having the least power makes it a great work truck.

Am I wrong, but wasn't those 0-60 time tests done loaded?

Yeah they were loaded, unloaded, and I think up grades.

In any case, it's the only way to test and come out with hard numbers. Anything else would be qualitative measuring and could be subject to bias.

I like the 09 F150. I just wont buy one with a 5.4 in it and I wont buy a first year model Ford.

I'll wait for the Ecoboost to come out.
the toyota also has a weak frame, lots of bed bounce, and more vibration coning through the steering than the others. the interior also looks and feels cheap. oh lets not forget the tailgate issue, I use my truck frequently for hauling and occasionally tow. Toyota has a record of building cheap economical vehicles, not what I am looking for in a truck.

I don't know how many of you that say the 5.4 is all that the truck needs live up in the mountains at high elevation. I do and pull a trailer, so I currently use a turbo diesel, but the overall truck is a little larger than I need most of the time.
I live in CO, venture anywhere from 5K-11K+ feet elevation loaded & loaded (7500lbs) every year. I will admit, as the elevation increases, the performance slowly decreases. But the same is true with any gasser, whether a truck or econo box car. I've owned a 2V & 3V 5.4L F150 4spd. The GM 5.3L stuggles much more than the 5.4L and the 6.0L Silverado 1/2 tons are so rare around here I don't know how they compare. The Titans and Tundras do make these grades slightly quicker, but we're talking seconds not minutes. Many times you can tell these people and my friends are really pushing their trucks. Myself, I take my time and take it easy, there really is no rush for me to get to the top first.

Your turbo Diesel has an advantage and why you see many of the people locally buying up diesels for their hauling/towing purposes, even if they don't need their full capability. It's also not a fair comparison to judge the 5.4L to a 7.3L, 6.0L or 6.4L PSD at these altitudes due to the turbo induction.

I agree with everything you said. That's why I wont buy a Tundra in its current build. The powertrain is incredible. The brakes are great.

The problem is they cut so many corners on the rest of the truck they should be ashamed of it.

The sheet metal is paper thin. The bumpers are so weak and the chrome job rusts after a few hundred miles. The dash layout is the worst I've ever seen in a vehicle. The radio is to far away and the gauges are set so deep you can't see them. The interior looks cheap with all the plastic. The Paint is ultra thin. The tailgate is a joke. It bounces like a pogo stick and it's because of the cheap three piece riveted frame.
The worst part of all is it's darn ugly.

That's why I'm interested in a new F150 when they come out with the Ecoboost. Even though I'm a Toyota first guy and even after having 7 perfect Toyota's I'm willing to look at a Ford.

I've owned three brand new Ford trucks as the original owner in the mid to late 80's and they were the worst vehicles I've ever owned by a long shot.

Now that the quality is better I'm willing to look at one again. That's how much I think of the new Tundra that I'm willing to give Ford another try. I admit that if the Tundra was built better I'd already own one. I'm not loyal to any brand.
If someone builds a better truck I'll check it out.
I like the F150 I just don't like the weak underpowered 5.4.

How much power are you expecting from the EcoBoost 3.5? I ask because I believe it will by down by 30+ hp compared to the Tundra 5.7.

I thought a 4.6 Ecoboost was in the works after they unveil the 3.5. I think the 3.5 will have 340 HP but that's still an improvement over the current 5.4 and it will get much better MPG's.

Because last i checked i didn't throw my leg over the engine and ride it down the road.....Its about the ENTIRE truck which virtually every test so far has said the F150 was excellent

Big advantage I see to the EcoBoost is that it gives better performance & milage compared to the current 5.4, thereby making it a more efficient powerplant. I also like the fact that it will maintain its power at altitude because it forced induction.

I don't have a problem with the EcoBoost being a little less in power compared to the Toyota IF it gets better milage. If it gets the same milage, yet has less power, I do have a problem with that. That is one of my problems with the 5.4; less power, yet milage is the same making it a less efficient engine.

I agree V8EXPLR, there are a lot of turbo diesel buyers that really don't need the 3/4 ton truck, they just like the performance when towing, especially at altitude. But now with the higher initial purchase price, higher maintenance costs, and more expensive fuel they really don’t pay back like they used to.

I believe there is a 5.0 DOHC EcoBoost in the works (Bobcat), but I wouldn't expect that in any F150 except the Raptor or new Lightning.

I think the EB 3.5 will have 330-350 HP, tuned more for FE than *****-to-the-wall power.

A friend of mine got a new 2007 F-150 ex cab short bed new last year with a 5.4 and i got to drive it around and its very comfortable to drive smoth ride,

But after i got on the high way in traffic the truck had no acceleration for lane changes no (Kick me back in my seat) feal comparried to my 96 PUSHROD (302) i get great acceleration.

He gets 14MPG Mixted

I get 16 + MPG Mixted (i pulled 17.5 this week)

I think the big problem here is the Curb Weight on the new trucks these new trucks look good clean inside and out but do we realy need a 1/2 ton truck this big (can we even call it a half ton now)? First the RAM was the biggest then Ford came back with the 2004, then Gm came out with theres, And know the 2 Gen Tundra, I think the new 2009 will be bigger then the new tundra. Its getting Ridiculus to me.

You got my truck curb 4800 lbs with an 13 year old original 302 making better MPG than the new F1's "I cant tow as mutch but still WTF Ford get with it
