Befor i drive myself nuts reading all the other posts on Mercon SP im gonna just ask. Went to a garage that does trans flushes, they flushed my tranny with mercon 3 and added 2 bottles of this additive that they get from the manufacturer of the machine that does the flush. Bottle claims to make mercon 3 compatable with mercon 5, honda, dodge .... basically says "add this, and your good to go" I drove home from the shop and stopped to check the fluid, notice it was down half a quart and read the dipstick. Local stores didn't sell sp and said it was dealer only.
My question is, Should i be draining this fluid out and driving another vehicle to the dealer?? Trans shop says they will give me the # on the bottle and for me to ask them. Says drive it for a few thousand miles and flush it again with sp if i really want to. Just sucks having paid for a flush, now they said they will do it for free if i bring in the fluid. Also could i just drain it myself out of the pan, or should it be flushed to get it out of the converter? Thanks for your help.
If you have a TorqShift you're going to have EXPEN$IVE problems if you run any fluid other than MERCON SP. And yes, you need to do a complete flush to get the fluid out of the torque converter, too. If you don't you'll have a 50/50 mixture of MERCON SP and fluid that will harm your trans. I'd change it right now instead of giving the wrong fluid time to hurt things.
Another thing to know is that if the trans isn't at least up to 170F when you do the flush it won't flush properly and you'll get a much smaller percent change.
PS - There is NO WAY to convert MERCON to any other type of fluid. And there is no such thing as MERCON 3.
If you don't have a TorqShift you are probably alright.
I would be taking (possibley towing) the truck to the dealer for a proper flush and fill along with a new filter. I would then be sending the so called trans shop the bill...
thanks for the help. About 15 miles to the shop, gonna have them flush it with sp, do you think i need to change both the filters?? What bout just removing the external and dumping the canister? Thanks again, i actually couldn't sleep thinking about it. I have found these type of forums ( I use DOO Talk for snowmobiles) are the greatest, thanks again.
well talked to the people at Run-rite (makers of the product) and they say that you need a special lisence to make the claim that your product works with sp. they said that they don't have the lisence so they can't actually say that it works, but say that there should be no problems with the truck. I am in construction(and out of work now) so i am going to leave the truck sit till next week and have them flush it with sp.
Ohh man I've used those Run-rite machines at work. Never did like them. They seem to think their ATF works in 90% of cars. The rep/trainer of the machine came in and did a demo on one of my co-workers Caravan. 2 weeks later her trans. needed a rebuild.
It kinda sucks when you can't trust someone who does somthing for a living. Even when you know them. I build houses, my name is on every job and every job is done as good as i can do it. You would think a garage would do the same, guess there are enough customers that they can do a @#$% Job and not care.
