BG Trans Fluid VS Mercon SP

Brought my 2004 F350 Torqueshift Diesel in for a trans flush at the dealer. Thinking that it's a no brainer (Use Mercon SP ONLY!! From the manual). They used a BG MERC5 bulk oil full syn. After going around with the service writer he sicked the service manager on me with the response of " the fluid is fully compatable and it comes with a warrenty ($1000.00, won't cover the cost to remove the trans). Looked all over for the specs and compatability of the oil (dealer just gave me a web site BGprod.com) with no results. Any help on should I flush this stuff out and demand they put SP or LV? Or is it a better product and I'm being too literal on this issue?
Thanks,
Dave

Agree with AGE. Replace it with either SP or LV.

Make them flush it and use SP or LV. You would expect a Ford dealer to use Ford products.

According to the BG Products, Inc. website their fluid is NOT MERCON SP or MERCON LV rated. If you leave that fluid in the trans it probably will destroy your solenoids at a minimum.
BG Universal Synthetic ATF

BG Universal Synthetic ATF is the superior choice to use in all passenger and commercial automatic transmissions. It meets or exceeds the performance criteria of many automatic transmission fluids including Mercedes Benz ATF, BMW, Ford Mercon® V, Mopar ATF+4™, Nissan Matic J/K, Allison C-4, Toyota Type T-IV and Toyota WS. It provides excellent protection of gears and offers superior thermal stability, anti-wear protection, outstanding oxidative stability, foam resistance and corrosion control, exceptional low temperature fluidity, and excellent shear stability to ensure a long service life.

Thanks for all the quick replies. The dealer and the BG rep says that it's compatible so they are NOT going to change it at their expense. Going to find a different dealer to get the fluid replaced. I think that it's BS that they don't follow Ford's recommendation and put oils in that are not authorized by the customer! After all the years of preaching that "Use only Ford parts and oil recommendations for your Ford Trucks or you'll void the warranty." I guess once your out of warranty it's OK cuz if it messes up your tranny you have to pay for the replacement.

Call Ford customer service. They should have made you aware before doing the work with a non-Ford product.

I would print this response and go back to the dealer and demand they flush it with Mercon LV. If a Ford dealership won't believe one of their own engineers that this stuff will ruin your transmission, it's time to start barking up the corporate ladder to get the situation resolved. If necessary in the meantime, go to a different dealer and get it flushed with LV and hopefully you can get a refund.

Call ford cust svc again!!! get their fax # or email address and send them a copy of what was put in and what the manual says it should be.

Then ask for the correct service at a different dealer and a warranty for repairs as needed.

Don't go back there again.

I'm not a Ford engineer.

Back when I was a Ford engineer I occasionally had to talk to dealer service departments. They NEVER took my advice.

I would show them BG's own website that says it is not MERCON SP or MERCON LV.

I know you are no longer a Ford engineer, but your word on this issue is certainly more credible than any service writer or even service manager at a dealership.

Unfortunately, it looks like they would rather ruin some poor customer's transmission than put the correct fluid in it. Who knows how many other people they have done this to. Hopefully someone a little higher up the food chain can do something about it.
