Is this the lower steering shaft you're talking about? https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/m...t-coupler.html

This is my 1974 F100 4X4. No rag joint. The U-joint in the shaft looks tight, but this coupler between the power steering box and shaft is loose. I'm trying to find a replacement, but no luck yet.
All I find is a whole new shaft, like on LMC, that replaces the entire shaft with two new joints of different design...but they're around $250.

I just want to replace this joint to keep the cost low. Seems like this is the same joint the OP is talking about?

Click on the .pdf link to look at the diagram for the steering column and see if these are the parts you need.
C6TZ-3C760-A Spacer
C6TZ-3C669-A Spring
C6TZ-3C668-A Bearing
C6TZ-3E507-A Retainer

Parts International, Farmers Branch, TX (972) 241-8730 has 5 spacers, 50 bearings and 1 retainer.
Wesley Obsolete Parts, Liberty, KY (606) 787-5293 has 11 of the springs.
There are several other dealers and suppliers that have one or two of the parts but only Wesley has any of the springs.
Also, the complete assembly, shaft and all is p/n D2TZ-3B676-B. I couldn't locate any dealer or obsolete supplier that had any.

Wow! That's a great help! Thank you Thank you!
I'm going to give them a call and see if I can get some of these parts. Also, I'm going to look for C6TZ-3B676-A which looks like the coupler housing?

Thanks again! I'll report in what I can find at these suppliers.

I don't show that p/n in my parts book, however I did locate them.
C6TZ-3B676-A (Not sure what it fits)
Green Sales, Cincinnati, OH has 5 (800) 543-4959
Bob Allen, Overland Park, KS has 4 (913) 381-2999
Just a note, if you call Bob Allen hold on to your wallet. You'll leave with it a whole lot lighter!

I saw the 3B676 part number is pointing to what looks like the coupler in the PDF that you attached above. I thought the C6TZ prefix and -A suffix would apply since it applied to the other parts shown in the PDF illustration. Am I wrong?

Yes, that is incorrect, if you look at the diagram it points to the housing and has the note "part of 3B676". This is the complete lower shaft assy. P/N D2TZ-3B676-B.
I did a search for that p/n and no dealer or obsolete parts supplier has any.

This rag joint is a few dollars at your local auto supply store.
You will need a grinder to remove the rivets, but your original unit lasted over 30 years, for a few bucks, you can get another one that should last at least that long.

Yep .... a rag joint last a long time with no attention, just look at it ever few years and replace when it starts getting soft. After removing the rivets, you use bolts from then on, and you can change them often as you like if it so suits.

a friend of mine grafts in a steering shaft from a taurus. Im not sure what year of taurus or what part he replaces, but you might check a few out and see if anything there would work for you. a lot more available and chaeaper than aftermarket parts.

Update: Following Mike's advice I called a few of the suppliers. Parts International had the most parts, as he said. Price was okay. But, the outside housing doesn't come separately from the whole shaft P/N D2TZ-3B676-B.

Wesley suggested Green Sales @ 1800-543-4959. They looked up the P/N and said the old assy is replaced by D8TZ-3B676-A. They have remanufactured parts in stock at $225.

But, this is also the cost of the upgraded Borgeson shaft replacement:

No damper for $235
Borgeson Universal 000970 - Borgeson Universal Telescoping Steering Shafts - Overview - SummitRacing.com

With damper for Damper for $270
Borgeson Universal 000975 - Borgeson Universal Telescoping Steering Shafts - Overview - SummitRacing.com

My options are:
  1. Rebuild the existing coupler for around $50 and hope the housing isn't worn as well, or that the U-Joint is okay (seems tight).
  2. Buy the replacement lower shaft D8TZ-3B676-A for $225
  3. Buy the upgraded Borgeson shaft for $235

I think I'll buy the Borgeson shaft. It's more money than I want to spend but it's the most reliable solution and I wind up with a whole new shaft (replacing the U-Joint at the same time).

Thanks Mike for your help, it is greatly appreciated! I'll report back how the install goes.

Didn't realize my first response didn't include the link to this other thread... Hopefully this can be of use; the cost is a bit less than the aftermarket shafts.

^ 1976/79 F100/250 4WD / 1979 F350 4WD: The lower steering shaft and couplers used on these trucks is a ONE PIECE ASSEMBLY. FoMoCo never offered individual parts for them ^

1966 F100 4WD, 1967/75 F100/250 4WD use totally different steering shaft and couplers. 1966 F100 4WD is one year ony, but some of the individual parts are the same as 1967/75.

NO! You do not want it!! = 1965/68 N850/1000 & NT850/950 These are BIG trucks. N/NT series available 1963 thru 1969.

1974 F100 4WD Lower Steering Shaft and Coupler Assy's original part number was D2TZ-3B676-A which was replaced by D2TZ-3B676-B, but...

ALL 1967/75 F100/250 4WD's use the SAME lower steering shaft and coupler assy., because...

D5TZ-3B676-B replaced: C7TZ-3B676-A & B; C9TZ-3B676-A & B; D1TZ-3B676-A & B; D2TZ-3B676-A & B

Uh huh...

Mike has one 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, it's on a CD and is available from hipoparts.com for about $22.00. It was scanned from an early 1979 edition, so it has errors and omissions.

I have three of these catalogs, all are on Ford microfiche slides. One is from 1979, one is from 1981, the 3rd is the final edition of 10/88. I bought the 10/88 edition from Ford, paid $125.00 for it, plus tax.

I have O-S-I (Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange) catalogs, AFAIK, Mike has none. See all these replaced part numbers? That's why these catalogs are necessary, because...

FoMoCo is in-famous for replacing 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY YEAR!

In 1988/89, FoMoCo changed the package quantity of a gazillion parts. When the IDIOTS did this, they changed the part numbers suffix, rendering all the previous part numbers OBSOLETE

How many of these new part numbers are listed in a parts catalog printed prior to 1988? N-O-N-E = NONE!

I was a Ford partsman for 35 years, have over 30,000 Ford basic part numbers memorized. So when peeps ask parts related questions, 99% of the time, I do not have to search thru parts catalog illustrations to find the basic part number.

Mike is a nice guy, knows what's he's doing...because of this I passed along the link and password to the proprietary locator so he could search for obsolete parts for y'all that ONLY the dealers have.

And just like now, when Mike is unaware of what a part number fits, or has posted a part number he's unaware that was replaced, I usually chime in with the info.

And Mike is very helpful in another way. Since many of y'all have no parts catalogs (why I dunno, it should be the FIRST thing you buy), Mike scans/posts pics from it when FTE members including myself request them.
