Steering shaft u-joint

1976 F-150 4x4 360 4-speed with power steering

I have play in my steering and have tracked the source down to the u-joint in the steering shaft near the firewall.

I found this quote by NumberDummy (thread is here):
1976/79 F100/250 4WD's & 1979 F350 4WD's have a rag joint, which connects the input shaft of the steering box to the flange of the one piece "lower steering shaft and coupler assy" that has no U-joint.

Since it's a one piece assembly, no individual parts are available for it. The whole tamale has to be replaced.
Note: When he says "...has no U-joint" I believe he means there is no u-joint on the lower end where it connects to the gearbox. They all appear to have u-joints on the upper end near the firewall.

The one-piece assembly is pretty expensive (over $300 at LMC). Has anyone tried rebuilding that upper u-joint? If so, can you share the part numbers you used? I don't have much experience with u-joints; can I just take that joint into a parts shop and have them find a kit that fits? Are there any other options?

Thanks.

Try to find a decent one at a wrecking yard. That's what I'd do. New parts are so dang expensive on these trucks. Good luck.

You may have to go after market.
I was not able to find that part at a parts store.
All they had was universal style rag joints.
You might be able to find one in a jy but it's worn also so why bother.
One or two of the guys on the forum might be able to track one down for you.
Here's what I did on my '74.

Thought you might like to see some more goodies.
Scroll down to page 212 for the joints.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping for.

I was assuming that the joint was welded to the shaft since it is sold as an assembly. I need to get out there and look at it more closely. Does anyone know if the shafts are double-D or splines?

It's pinned by the through bolt.
Splines.
At least on a '74

flange of the one piece "lower steering shaft and coupler assy" that has no U-joint.
It has a u-joint but it is not replaceable.

...3/4 x 36 splines.. some are fully splined but later shafts are single-D at the steering column. Verify yours, both ends, before ordering parts.
