upgrading rag joint
the weakest link in my steering is the rag joint right at the steering box. it has a u joint a nd slip yoke allready in the steering shaft. what can i do to strengthen the rag joint to keep it from breaking

Eliminate it. Get it out of there and you will never have to replace it again.
If you are up to it, just make a new steering shaft and ditch the rag joint. You will not feel much vibration. I run 3 u-joints with no rag in one of my rides, and it is as reliable as can be.

back when i had my 79 350 4x4,i went to the local driveline shop and got some 7/8" octagonal shaft and yokes and ujoints to match and made my own,overkill on the shaft but i was running boggers on it and total cost back then was like $140,i chose that shaft over round stock with a keyway as i felt it was much stronger and less prone to becoming sloppy where keyway is ,however i have a 76 cj7 that i run the round stock on and no problems after 4 years,hope it helps some

FWIW: The reason for the rag joint is so if there is an accident, the steering shaft does not come through the firewall and kill you like a spear. On UJ equipped trucks (manual steering), the angle is such that the shaft folds up and does not come through the firewall in a head on crash.
