I need to find a replacement part for my 74 f100 4 wheel drive. Its the lower section of steering column. it has a u-joint on the upper section and some kind of weird joint on the end that fastens to the gearbox. the weird joint has a rubber grommet on it and has a lot of play. any suggestions where to look?

Go to Bronco Graveyard. They have a section that you can cut to size with good torrington bearings on either end. I replaced mine with this same unit and it fit pefectly with zero problems since.
If I understand the part you're talking about, its the same thing thats worn out on my '78 150 (U-joint, then short shaft to the steering gear) I'm pretty sure that JEGS sells an aftermarket shaft that uses an actual needle bearing U-joint thats supposed to last near forever and be able to accomodate several inches of body lift. It ain't cheap though, I believe it was somethin like $230!!! You could check 'em out and see if it would work on your 100 if the price don't scare you
Is it just the rag joint that needs to be replaced?
This rag joint is a few dollars at your local auto supply store.
You will need a grinder to remove the rivets, but your original unit lasted over 30 years, for a few bucks, you can get another one that should last at least that long.

Welcome to FTE
1972 F100 4WD & 1973/75 F100 & 1975 F150 4WD's use a different steering "Shaft & Coupler Assy." than the 1976 & 1977 (unique), 1978 & 1979's use (also unique).
It's also a different Steering Shaft & Coupler than the 1978/79 Bronco's used.
The parts do not interchange between 1972/75 and the later couplers.
1973/75 & 1976/77 F250 4WD's ("High Boys") use a different Steering Shaft & Coupler Assy than the 1972/75 F100/150's use.
The U-joint (C6TZ3815A) on the upper portion of the steering shaft & coupler is replaceable.
On the lower section, there are two flat pieces of metal Ford called bearings (C6TZ3C668A). These are replaceable, too.
The "weird joint & rubber grommet" was only serviced with the complete assembly (D5TZ3B676B which replaced D2TZ3B676B).
It's obsolete and is very hard to find new. The other part numbers I typed in blue are also obsolete, but I've found new ones in the past for other FTE members.
There is no "rag joint" on these 1972/75 Steering Shaft & Coupler Assy's.
So is the U-joint replaceable on all the models you mentioned? The joint on my '78 is pretty much shot and if I could find a replacement for it or even adapt a joint from something completely different it would sure beat paying over two hundred bucks to fix the sloppy steering...

The steering shaft and couplers used on 1978/79's is a completely different type, and was only sold as a complete assembly, so there are no replacement parts for it.
1978/79 F150's are different than 1978/79 F250/350's. 1978/79 F150 Super Cabs are different than 1978/79 Regular Cabs!
These have been obsolete for over 10 years, so finding new one is almost impossible.
What series do you have? F150? F250? If an F250, what are the last 6 digits of your VIN, that makes a difference too.
email me off FTE (click on my user name to gain access). I know of several places that MIGHT have some originals (new/used)..but if I post the info here, someone might beat you to it.
Hello NumberDummy I am looking for a replacement steering shaft/coupler for my 1978 F250 Super Cab. I couldnt see how to email you directly, for privacy reasons regarding obsolete parts. Thank you for your time. Aaron.
Guess i am a bit slow. Under the name, I only see gallery, profile, and past posts. I don't see anything that says email.
Click on NumberDummy name in upper left of post, then on the drop down menue click on "View public profile". When that page opens, click on "contact info"
Guess i need my hand held, cause i am not seeing "contact info" on the next page, following "view public profile" Slow and Blind.
The way my page reads is after you click "view public profile" and that page opens, there is a series of tabs, the first is "visitor messages", second, "about me", third tab is "statistics", fourth "friends", the fifth tab is "contact info" and last tab is "garage".
The only thing I can think of, if this doesn't match what you see on your screen, is that as a new member maybe you need twenty-five posts to access the contact info page.
What parts are you looking for your truck, tilt/non-tilt, 2wd or 4wd, manual/automatic, with or w/o power steering. let me know.
