there was a wildcat 700 that used to race back home on the uphill snow drags...the guy had a couple shots of nitrous on it and a turbo... the word was that it was pusing 250-300 horse if he lit up the nitrous. the 1/4 mile uphill was too short for him to use too much of it.
Those hillclimbers are pretty wild! I used to always have the most powerful sleds back in the day when they were either fast and heavy or light and gutless. There are so many sleds now making good power and light. I think my sled is around 485 pounds. I would not ride a 4 stroke because they are still too front heavy for the way I like to ride in deep snow. Even though I am a big guy, the lighter mountain sleds are all I would buy.
One of the fastest sleds we have owed was a 440 ski roule (cant remember the model of it)
It was sleek looking, could hit around the 100 mph mark (thats with a 15 inch wide track and about a 20 inch wide ski stance haha) My dad even had it on the pavement one time and just about flipped it right over backwards when he pinned it, that thing had get up and go!
I rode a guys modded Mach Z with 190 hp once...that thing would pick the skis 6" at 90 mph!!! I'm not interested in the 4 strokes yet either, just a little too heavy yet.
On the groomed trail system they would rock with fuel mileage and range but there are too many sweet spots we go to with waist deep snow and they are a boat in those conditions! Even though they are getting the weight down on them, its still front heavy - way too much to make what I do enjoyable.
Thats getting out of my price range by a long shot!
So much of the riding we now do is about finesse so the extra power, if it comes with any extra weight, doesnt do it for me. I used to ride RXL's, Storms, and then an Ultra with an 800 big bore kit - that was fun - 165 hp and not too heavy. Hard on belts though!
1993 was the first Storm. I think Yamaha came out with the VMax4 in 1992. Tcat and Mach z were 1993 (I think). All those sleds were front heavy pigs. My Storm was a 1995. I think it was 135 hp stock and weighed around 565 for the long track. My Dragon RMK weight is 485 with 140 hp!
We were but like I said, your choices were heavy and fast - or lighter and gutless. With the twin cylinder rebirth the power to weight issue started to improve. Mass centralization and the rider forward positioning helped immensely too.
