Im kinda on the fence about the 4 strokes. Yes they are more economic, and they are way quieter, but you do lose alot of power in comparible engines (a 20 horse 2 stroke vs a 20 horse 4 stroke)
A guy I was taking my apprentichip with was also a commercial fisherman at deschambeault lake, and he switched from a 2 to a 4. He said the lack of power sucked, but the rest was amazing.
Sheldon, I forgot already - is your 4.3 the 220 hp fuel injected version?
We have a Searay with a 135 hp Merc Black Max outboard and Ward used GPS this summer and it went 52 but with a bit of trimming to get there. It has the power steering option which makes it very nice to control. Our next one will be a 19 foot w/4.3. We will buy used so not sure if we will end up with the 220 hp version or the 190 hp carb model (we woild prefer the fuel injected but you lnow how it is to buy used). Wont be next season, maybe the one after.
We decided to get the carbed 190 horse. I forget exactly why now, but Im pretty sure the dealer said you get more bottom end grunt, and a little less (5mph is what he said) top end speed.
Since we plan on doing alot of skiing with it, this was the best choice for us. The dealer also kinda talked me out of the fuel injected, because he said there was alot more problems with them, compared to a carb.
I originally though, well the more power the better, but the dealer kinda set me straight on it.
I also thought about buying used, but the market for used boats kinda sucks for the buyer. The boats i kept on wanting to get were around the 10 year old mark, and still around the 20k mark. Well for an extra 8 ish grand i got the exact boat i wanted, with tons of neat options that most of the used boats didnt have.
Extended swim platform, the upgraded seating, steering wheel, and the tandem axle trailer are a few of the major upgrades.
2-stroke vs 4-stroke is a power to weight battle. the 4-stroke needs typically double the cc's to make equivalent power of a 2-stroke unless major valve work is designed for ultimate performance. i like the 4-strokes for the quietness, and i also prefer an outboard to an inboard for servicing....
Ill be able to tell you about the whole servicing thing when i have problems. Ya know though, its just a car engine in there, and there is actually alot of room to work on it. Now as for changing the oils and stuff, who knows, that might be tough.
One reason I love an inboard is the fuel consumption is great in them!
I actually kinda like the look of an outboard myself. To me they look neat. But with all the advantages of an inboard (minus the cost and the little bit slower it plains) for my needs it was an inboard all the way.
I know of this little old shop that has been around for awhile in saskatoon. Its kinda out near the john deere/pbr auction area. I cant recall the name offhand but I think its rons marine.
Sure no problem. I dont know how the mechanics are at thomas motors in nipawin, or if they do rebuilds, but my dad and I love dealing there, and we arent even polaris guys!
I mentioned that shop to him but sounds like he had a bad experience once. I would give them a try anyway since they are close and have been in business for quite a while.
