Toyotas are pretty dependable vehicles, among the best from what I have seen rivalled only by Honda. Dont mind Sherm, he has 'Blue Oval Tunnel Vision!!'

Honda's give em a run for their money. My accord I owned for 6 years had only one thing wrong with it. That was the windsheild washer dispensers would leak on the hood when you used them. Other than that, not a penny spent other than on regular maintence. I wanted a CRV when I picked up my RAV4 but the Matrix I had was a lease so I had to take it back to Toyota as the lease wasn't done yet. The Matrix (TRD) was a hoot to drive but really didn't cut it in the country in the winter. Not enough snow clearance!
Sherm, some day you may see the brighter side of Toyota , depending on how bad you got Blue Oval Tunnel Vision! We've run across quite a few Ford guys working the oil patch who aren't happy with them. Most want to know how good the Toyota is. One guy I know has over 80,000 kms on his Tundra and nothing has gone wrong. He's had it about 1 1/2 years now.
When it comes to trucks, man I have a hard time choosing to drive something other then a ford. My womans sisters husband bought a new toyota truck and I wouldnt mind hearing how it does. They traded a newer chevy half ton in on it, and i would never touch a chevy half ton with the 5.3? in it. His was crap.
I know the yotes and honda's have the quality when it comes to the cars, theres no question (except in this chapter from a couple guys that really have no experience with them), but in the trucks they are relatively new to the game there yet. Although they dont seem to be doing bad either in that dept.
When it comes to economy cars, well ford doesnt have my vote yet on them. I tend to try and pick the best vehicles for my use, and so far I have suceeded.
I would love to have all fords, but in the car department they are lacking unfortunatly.
However when it comes to trucks, well I can stick up for them
Our fearless leader FTEKen wrote in a post once, if we cant be critical of our own make, how to we ever expect them to improve. I couldnt agree more, and try to practice that in the most fair way.
I havent heard any of the guys around here having any problems with the 5.3 or any other make of truck with the gas engines. My friend's Dad has a 2001 Chevy that he bought brand new and has over 400000 kms and now problems to speak of. I had a 2000 Chevy with a lift kit, big tires, programmer, exhaust and k/n air filter that he took to about 225000 kms before trading. Only problem was a sensor of some type and a set of plug wires. I pulled a 4 place enclosed sled trailer all over the place with that one - it was a good truck! GPS at 205 kph with 305/70/16 BFG Mud Terrains.
I am the same as you Sheldon - I will not hesitate to point out the weaknesses of anything I own otherwise there is no chance of improvement. I have sat in with some reps from Flexicoil and CaseIH over the years because the farm equipment dealers knew that my brother and I were no bs when it came to pointing out problems and areas that needed improving. I was most impressed by the engineers from the Steiger factory in Fargo when they really gave a damn about what we had to say and it was cool to see some of the stuff we talked about be addressed with the introduction of the STX series of tractors!
That is really cool to see your ideas made a difference, always makes a guy feel great!
As for the 5.3 I have no experience besides his. His could not keep coolant in it no matter what. They went on a trip towing a fairly light 5th wheel camper, and I cant remember exactly how much coolant he went through, but it was amazing. Didnt leak it, and didnt smoke it out the back. Where the hell was it going?! He took it to the chevy dealer in PA I dont know how many times, and they couldnt figure it out either. I forget how many km he had on it, but it for sure wasnt over 50k.
He then shortly after traded it in on the toyota he has now. I tried telling him to go for a F150, but his wife did some research, and apparantly the toyota has better ratings in this and that blah blah, so they ended up with the yota.
So I have just one 5.3 chevy to base my opinion on them on, and it wasnt a good one!
Oh and at work we have one chevy heavy duty truck, and it has that 8 liter, or whatever it was. That thing sucks back the oil like you wouldnt believe. Seems to get ok power, but it doesnt seem to be all that great in general for a motor.
The rest of the truck isnt THAT bad, for a chevy haha
