Haha. Well I dont think the last attempt is very good myself either. I wouldnt mind seeing how ford does with their own diesel, but there are a few factors I am curious about. For one, ford isnt a diesel engine company. Its kind of hard to see them making a better engine then a company like cat, cummins, or navistar, because these guys ARE diesel companies.
Should be an interesting time on FTE when those trucks come rolling out though
Actually the Ford built Brazilian 7.8 in my L8000 is a great engine, quiet and good low end power. It`s much nicer than the Cat 3208 in the other L8000.
Don`t forget that for many years Ford built their own engines in their farm tractors. A friend has an old 70`s 110 hp Ford tractor that has been turned up for tractor pulls, over 13,000 hrs on it and the engine has never been touched.
Yes they do have decent engines in other countries, from what ive read, but not here.
Ive never driven a big truck with a 7.8 or a cat 3208 so I cant comment on those.
Ford tractors, well theres a reason they still arent out there on the market! I know they were probably OK though, but ford never even came close to leading the market in the tractor department.

The reason Ford isn`t still on the market is that they sold out in 1991 when Ford decided to get out of the business after buying New Holland in 1985 which wasn`t a tiny company either. Many successful manufacturers sold out when the right offer came along.
I can`t find a decent site on Ford AG/construction history but while this won`t give you any idea of how big Ford was world wide in the Ag and construction machine manufacturing business here it is for what it`s worth: TractorData.com - Ford tractors sorted by model
Very cool site by the way! But it does make me wonder why ford did get out of the tractor business fairly quickly after they got in it? Bit off more then they could chew? Fierce competition? Who knows.
Dont get me wrong, I think there is some really neat ford tractors out there, but I know they never came close to being one of the top dogs, like my fav JD, Case, etc.
I went and looked at a really cool early 40's ford 9n on this weekend. It just about came home with me, but i started looking at the price of roto tillers, and it ended up staying.

In our area there were a few guys who had Ford tractors years back. They were so so at best. The guys were married to them because nobody would give them much on trade. They had a deal with Steiger for a while making 4wd tractors but they never could get the engine right back then either!!!! . I think they all had the V8 903 Cummins and it was no prize.
I think Cropper Motors sold quite a few Ford tractors and Claas combines in that area but they just didnt go over big.
