Boy it takes a long time to read all the off topic posts 17 pages where have I been?
Oh ya working here and at home. nearly got the garage pad built had to get nearly 50 yards of gravel in for fill after the topsoil was removed. Way to much work for me so far tamping and stuff.
And now back to the topic.
Great to have you back with us Duncan, 17 pages is a fairly long time.
What did the gravel cost and how big is your garage pad? Good base gravel has really taken a hike this year.
No, and no progress haha. I have to get some 8 foot cross beams, three of them, before I call a welder. The ones I have are usable, but could be replaced to be better, so Id like to get them replaced at the same time i get the welder to do the other repairs.
As for gravel, Im still in the process of clearing a TON of caragana's out, then I have some leveling to do, which is tricky with the backhoe, takes some skill i dont quite have downpact yet, before I get some gravel out here.
I also am holding off for the next big ritchie brothers sale in edmonton May 28,29,30, to look for a dump. If I can hold off till I actually get a dump truck, for the 3 or 4 loads of gravel I need to get right off the bat, ill save quite abit of money hauling it myself. Those guys make pretty good cash hauling it all the way out to langham lol.
What do you mean by a cross beam, I-beam, angle iron or channel?
The good part about tearing out caraganas with the Bobcat and grapple fork is if it`s dry enough all the dirt falls off and after afew months they burn quite nicely. My neighbour had me pull out rows of them and none came back.
Making good cash hauling gravel is another myth....Figure out the cost of fuel, tires, plates/insurance and repairs while bouncing over rough roads and you can have it!
I think the last charge we got was around hundred bucks for a 20 minute ride to our farm loaded, and 20 minutes back to stoon, it is cheaper for me to haul it myself when I get a truck! (I still have to check those charges if i ever remember)
The beams I need are the crossbeams that go side to side, that ya bolt the wood on the deck too. Its channel iron right now, and I can get away with that, or good stiff angle iron, or pretty much anything really. My dad has an old small cultivator im gonna check out and see if I can get a chunk or two from there. Have any lying around by chance that may be for sale?
The caraganas here were crazy out of control. I dont know if a guy could pull them out like that. The roots really go al over the place. I know what ya mean about the dirt falling off, its sweet when that happens!
The topsoil is pretty good and hangs on pretty good, but i can usually shake it off!
I sure would like to get rid of alot of the crap before it has a chance to dry out too. That might just be a good dream I have lol.
The piles of caraganas I stacked up for the neighbour were huge. When he mentioned he was going to haul them to the dump I told him to light them up after the first good snow fall, alot quicker than hauling them 5 miles with a quarter ton.
Because the roots cross all over the place the grapple can get under neath and pull them out fairly easy uinless there`s too many and then I have to take smaller ''bites''. A Bobcat and grapple fork is the quickest way to remove stuborn caraganas I`ve found yet.
Gravel was costing $5 a yard and $6 a loaded mile its a 26x30 with 10ft walls and a 16ft door and a 12 ft door so I can drive straight thru the garage. Still leaves me half a garage to work in.
Oh sorry on topic
What am I doing in this handbasket and where are we going?
