1997 F-250 7.3 Torqshift

Can a 1997 F-250 4x4 with an E4od and 7.3 diesel be modified to run a torqshift. I spoke with a Ford engineer casually one time that said it could be done. He said the bell housing pattern was the same and the transfer case would bolt up. To control the transmission you could take the TCU out of an LCF (low cab foward). That is the only Ford truck that has a seperate transmission computer. What are your thoughts?

You'd probably be the first, and would attract great interest from a lot of members here!

I was hoping that not everyone here liked the E40d. Mine is still strong at 125k, but it does not compare to the Torqshift. The transmission makes the new trucks. I sell Ford commercial trucks for a living, and was hoping that someone else had done this. When I heard the LCF had a seperate computer it made the swap more of a reality in theory. If some one could verify the trans would bolt to the motor and transfer case, and that the LCF has a seperate computer, I will most likely have the shop do the sway for me and post the progress here.

My thoughts are that not all Ford engineers know what they are talking about.

All TorqShifts have the modular engine bolt pattern, the one used on the V10, 6.0L, and 6.4L . That's different than the 7.3L pattern. You'll need an adaptor made to bolt it up. I think the transfer case will bolt on, but I'm not certain.

The LCF TCU will be an interesting problem. It's true that it is a stand alone trans controller, but it does need engine and vehicle speed data to run. It expects this data over a CAN. That's Controller Area Network for those not in the know. You'll need to create a computer that can broadcast the data on a CAN line that the TCU needs from your engine and truck or the TCU will just keep the trans in first gear all the time.
