Hi everyone,
I drive a 2000, 6-speed, 7.3 liter now. So tramsmission overheating really isn't a problem.
(Shameless plug- The 7.3 will soon to be for sale.)
Anyway, I am going to be receiving a new 6.4 liter with the TorqShift auto. I have heard that the TorqShift overheats when pulling a trailer on steep grades. Is this a valid concern? Do the after-market oversize transmission pans help? If so, do they void the warranty?
I've never heard that. Been lurking around 6.0 forums for five years and the only tranny problems I recall are the planetary gear recall in the 2004 models. And some trannies were toasted early on when people souped up the trucks with the 150+ hp modules and tuners.
The torqshift is a major leap forward over the 4R100. Very solid unit.
I've run several trucks with TorqShifts at their max gross combined vehicle weight rating (that's up to 33,000 pounds on the F550) up Union Pass in Arizona and NEVER saw above 200F.
Union Pass is heading east from Bullhead City on AZ68. It's a 12 mile long grade averaging 8%. It was always at least 95F, and once 115F, in Bullhead City when I started up the grade. The F550 at 33K climbed the grade at 37 MPH with my right foot on the floor the whole way.
So far this is the best automatic trans i have ever had period! I have pulled a 7000lbs trailor up and down the "Grapevine" in Cali and only had to use the brake once. Pulling through Phoenix it was 116 deg., the trans temp stayed just under 200deg.

I concur. My last two work trucks have had the Torqshift, these are utility trucks, loaded to the gills with tools, fuel tank, pumps, you name it. Usually pulling a mini excavator or bobcat, through major city traffic. Never seen one get hot. They're a great tranny.
