transmission fluid changing question

I have a 99 F250 SD and i have 136000 miles on it. I bought the truck used and was wondering if i should cange the transmission fluid and filter since i dont know for sure if it has been changed. I heard that you should not change it after it gets on up there in miles.

Go ahead and change it. If the trans is going to die, it will do it regardless of fluid change.

Many people out there don't change the fluid or maintain the trans like they are supposed to. Then when the trans starts acting up they go ahead and flush it out hoping that will fix it. Trans dies anyway and that's how wives tales start.

Yep -- get it changed. There is an easy trans flush procedure here:
http://www.7point3.com/Writeups/TransFlush.aspx

And there is more than one way to skin this cat.

I have used this method and it is quite simple. Couple hours work at the most.

This is for the 4R100. Is there a different procedure for the 5R110W? Is the theory the same for ANY trans?

I Have 74k And Recently Flushed My Tranny And Changed In Line Filter Not The Internal Filter(recommended By Ford Every Other Tranny Flush Which Should Occur At 60k Intervals) I Am Very Pleased With The Flush And Notice Tranny Down Shifting Less When Going Up Hills.

The theory is the same for almost any trans. Some need some special steps added, and the TorqShift (5R110w) is one of those transmissions that need a change.

The TorqShift has a thermostat. When the trans is below about 165F it only sends 10% of the normal flow to the coolers. 90% is sent back into the trans. If you don't heat the trans well about 165F AND heat the new fluid that goes in you'll just mix the old and new and change only some of the old fluid and a lot of the new fluid.

That procedure is also here at FTE. https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...nsmission.html lI've used this procedure on a lot of different cars and trucks. The trick is in knowing what's different about each different trans.
