73-79 racetrack trim

Need some opinions here:
I have a 78 crew that originally had the racetrack trim. All the doors were rusted out completely, so I acquired 4 different doors, all of which do not have the lower racetrack trim.

I want to put the lower trim on the 4 "new" doors. Should I hang the doors on the truck first then apply the molding OR can I use the "old" doors and measure where the trim needs to be applied to the door and use those measurements to locate the plastic attaching clips on the "new" doors while they are still off the truck?

Does anybody have the lower racetrack trim in like new condition for the 6' box?
Thanks,
Eric

I would hang the doors first, so that I could measure twice, and eyeball the results to make sure my tape measure is measuring correctly. If it isn't, I would double check the door alignment. To be honest, I wish I had your problem. I own two crews, and don't have racetrack trim on any of them.

You can buy the race track trim for the bed new, the only pieces you can't buy are the crewcab doors, supercab (coming soon i've read) and the super camper special bed pieces. Check out some of the board sponsors, they sell the bed pieces you need.

Yes. It is the easiest to find on single cab trucks, and is the only thing at the moment you can find in reproduction.

Mike's Truck Salvage is where I got all my trim parts. He is a sponsor here. His price is way better than anyone or even ebay.

He does have a website, just look for it in a search engine or click his link on this site.

I too would do it with the doors installed.

any adjustment required would otherwise throw the alignment of them off.

IIRC, Crew cab doors are slightly narrower than front doors so they can be made from the front door trim.

I also wonder if the shorter box trim can be made out of Long box trim ?

Trim is just some place for rust to build!! My personal opinion is unless it is a factory restoration throw it in the scrap pile and when the pile is big enough cash in and buy more beer!!

Here in California, the only thing that you need to do to prevent rust is once in about every 30 years, take a garden hose and spray out all of the dirt that collects there.

Dennis, I talked to a person who is knowledgeable about many things bodywork. He recommended that i make my own trim with the longer door pieces. I am not really interested in find out how many of my first born it is going to cost to get the ends Tig welded together, ground down, polished, and re-chromed. I thought about cutting a chunk out of the middle, splicing it back together, but I still have the same problem of the machining and re-finishing. It would be nice if there was a way to "press" the metal like it was done at the factory.

Yep, I would get everything together before drilling holes and hanging the trim. I will have the same problem with my build on a my regular cab. The bed has the racetrack chrome, but the doors and fenders don't have any (new parts). So, I will get everything lined up correctly and go off the the bed for the chrome alignment. I will use some old parts I have to make a pattern and then go from there.

You can also use a chalk line for alignment across the doors
