Pyrometer ???

Pyrometer ???

Inlighten me, I'm having a brain fart here. Installing a Pyrometer in front of turbo or behind turbo. I understand the in stall in front so you know what the temp. is before the turbo, BUT you will have the same readings behind the turbo and a lesser chance of something getting into the turbo to. So is the brain thinking right here?

The readings pre vs post turbo pyro are at least 200 degrees higher. By the time the turbo deals with the exhaust and acts like a heat sink, the EGTs have dropped off significantly. Big rigs are all post turbo and there is no problem with that, you just need to know what to base your safe max temperature on.

As I understand it .............

Pre-turbo to have the most accurate reading to know when to "back off" of the throttle.

Post-turbo to know when it is safe to turn off engine after towing hard (never shut down after heavy towing with out a cool down period)

you will get different readings depending on pre/post turbo.
for engine vitals monitoring you will want to mount your thermocouple probe BEFORE the turbo, the post turbo readings are closer to 400 degrees less due to the heat energy absorbed by the turbo itself.
only reason for post turbo is for cool down function, but if you wait till preturbo is under 400 for a few minutes you should be good to go.

Pre-turbo is the way to go, the post turbo temps can vary up to 400F lower but it is not linear. So post turbo temps are not an acurate measure of pre-turbo temps, and pre-turbo temps are important to maintain safe combustion temps. Also the odds of an inconel temp probe breaking off are slim to none.

You can get a dual gauge and do both. Units like a Bully Dog moniter can do 2 and give you additional info like volts, real boost pressure, etc....Good Luck
