I'm going to install my pyrometer this weekend pre-turbo and so do you just tap a hole in the exhaust manifold? Also I've seen on Trucks! that they tapped the whole using some kind of vaseline or something to catch the particles while drilling the hole do you know what they used?? Anyone have some tips on installing the pyrometer.
just tap the manifold. make sure to get the drill bit started straight and keep it straight. you can put some wheel bearning greese on the bit and tap to catch the metal shavings. i also took a mechcanics magnet and stuck it up in the hole unti it came out clean, then took a shop vac and sucked out the hole.when you start it for the first time after the install let it idle for about 10 min so it could pass any pieces that may still be left in the manifold.
tap the manifold on the drivers side so the probe is pointing up, most of the shavings will fall to the floor
Heck, drill and tap the thing while the motor is at idle. Do this with a pretty cold motor like after its set for several hours will help with thye exhaust heat.
I tapped the piece right in front of the turbo, that way I have the temps averaged from both sides of the motor. I have a pic in my gallery if you would like to look. Works really well there for me anyway, as was not to bad to get to with a cordless drill and the tap while the motor was running.
I just used a little bearing grease like wlihntr said. Went slow and had no problems. Anything left over should blow through before the turbo has a chance to spool up. The hardest part for me was gathering the courage to actually drill into the manifold. Once that was done the rest was easy. www.gts-motorsports.com has a pretty good install page (although it is for OBS trucks) that should help you out if you need some pictures, like I did.
Good luck and have fun
I have an Autometer Pyrometer and I'm a bit confused...I have the 1/8" NPT threaded fitting on my pyrometer probe but do not have a pre-existing 1/8" NPT threaded hole..How do I put in a 1/8" NPT threaded hole without welding???
Make sure its 1/8 NPT (pipe tap). You shoud be able to get one at your local parts strore. Sounds like your on the right track.
The reason I am asking is because the NPT fitting I received did not have 1/8 threads it had bigger threads..Did I receive the wrong fitting from Autometer ??
Mine is VDO. Came with 1/4". If yours came with a 1/8" fitting just use it. No need to overthink this. No you don't need to call autometer. Just get a 1/8" NPT tap. They come with just about every tap and die set I have seen. The 1/4" on the other hand was a major pain to get. Ended up having to get mine through a plumbing supply store. But oh well, its done now.
