Went cruising with Blue on Friday night. Found out that even though the idle is a bit rich still, and my timing may not be spot on if the streets are wet you may not always be able to correct fast enough and *might* do a 360 in the middle of the street. You also may be able to be going 20 in a straight line and punch it and break it loose.
The best one was when the fire extinguisher in the back went scootin' across the box and the pin came out so it went off everywhere.
I did manage to get my '71 running too. Turns out the battery is toast and the other one I was trying to use wasn't the best either. So maybe next weekend I'll get a few things done on it that I'd like to get done and get the '69 tuned a bit better.
Can someone go set up my idle, check the timing, and re-pack my front wheel bearings for me before Friday night? I really just want to be able to get in and go when I get home, but won't be able to. I guess we'll see!!! Hopefully it isn't wet out again. I'm seriously thinking about saving some coin and swapping to a toploader. The only thing I'm not sure about is if the shifter would be long enough and still be a fairly short throw. Maybe someone here knows.....
The '71 needs a bunch of stuff. Shocks, carb work, check the timing, check the points, fix the gas gauge, see why the rear brakes don't work......ugh! I'm hoping I can get by without having to dump alot of money in it.
I've also decided that my next build will start of off a 428 or a 390 with some serious stoke and a solid roller cam. I'd be quite surprised if I never blow this 390 up!
Not yet. Maybe this weekend. It's a donor pickup for me. 360/C6/Dana 60. It's a twin to mine except for being newer and a camper special. It has the dual tanks, which will get used, among other things.
The body is fairly straight and had no rust at all. I'm not sure yet if I'll swap the bodies or swap the running gear.....
If you don't use that second under body tank, let me know, I'll buy it off of you. I want to remove the in-cab tank off of mine. Let me know if you have anything else-doors,hood, etc.- you might want to get rid of!
I'll keep that in mind. I'm going to use the second tank. We'll see how everything else ends up. If I can have two complete running pickups, I'll do it that way. If there will only be one running then I'll part the other out.
If you happen to run across any more camper specials, let me know bud. I really want to get rid of that in cab tank. I wish they sold an aftermarket one, but I haven't found one so far, and I don't want to go with the Mustang tank at the rear of the frame. Plan on using the bed, so don't want the filler in the bed floor.
Yea. I need to figure out why the gauge doesn't work. The only bad thing about that in frame tank is that if you want to run dual exhaust you will have to run it over to the other side......but at least it's in frame unlike some one else's genius design in the 70's and 80's. I don't really mind the in cab tank. Yea, sure....if it wasn't there I could slide the seat back another two inches, but what's two inches to a guy who's 6'5" and driving a 67-72.
I'd just like a little more storage room, and maybe put a couple of speakers back there. If I can find a CS tank, I'll graft a gas door from a later model -150, to make it look nice.
Got some pics of the '71 loaded up. All in all, the body is really good. The only dents are right in the beltline (bumpside). The right rear tail light area has seen some better days as well.

It's tough to tell, but there is a nice blue circle near the center of the rotor. I'm not sure what happened. I took the caliper off to re-pack my wheel bearings and I checked them the next day and that's what it looked like. I only drove it about 50 miles with no hard stops. At one point I could smell hot metal, but I was going down Hwy 30 keeping pace with a train, so I figured that's what it was from. I must've been wrong for once.....

Jake - I would say you have a caliper piston sticking and holding your pad to the rotor which is creating heat. The circle is probably from where the brake puck is connected to the backing plate. When you stopped and it cooled it left that impression. Check your caliper pistons to make sure they are working properly. Just my 2 cents which is probably 2 cents more than it is worth

That's what I was wondering. I'll have to check it out. I'm sure it's a custom job, but my calipers are held on with 5/8" bolts. Anyway, I was thinking I maybe tightened the bolt down too tight, not allowing the caliper to "float", causing the pad to be right against the rotor all the time. I knew the blue was definitely cause by heat. I've done enough metal working to know that.

EDIT - Hey George.....got any lines on a 428? After driving my 390 on wet streets I really think I need a 428......
It showed up on Craigslist. I was posted for $1000 the first time and didn't really catch my eye. Then it was listed again reduced to $750 and it caught my attention. My brother and I hooked the trailer on the GMC and high tailed it out to North Platte and for $650 cash it followed me home!!!
You just gotta keep your eye out for these things. I saw a '72 Highboy on there for nothing because the body was rust and beat. All that was good was the frame and drivetrain. I didn't have the money and I didnt think I needed a third pickup, but that was my chance for 4 wheel drive....
