I am in need of some help. Ive got a Spicer/brown lipe model 5531. I need another drive yoke for it. It is 10 spline 1 13/16 shaft 1350 series u joint. I have been reading this thread with intrest. I just got rid of a watson brown lipe flat top 43 m1 trans, and am thinking of parting with my 5831 if my friend does not buy it from me for his international A160. I doubt my flathead will bother this little 5531 any. It looks pretty damn stout.
Another option you can try is a conversion joint from Napco. I bought 2 of them online to go from my 1350 driveline to the 1410 flange and yoke on my 5831. I could not find anything smaller than the 1410 yokes for mine.
No one else is answering your questions, so let me take a stab at stimulating the flow of information.
are there any drawbacks to using one behind an automatic?
All I can think of is the cost of making up the drive-shafts, etc., and the large weight (& size) of these units. Consider ground clearance when you look at size issues.
obviously, you start out in whatever gear you wish to use, right?
This would be a generally good way to operate, but I expect those familiar with shifting big truck transmissions without using the clutch would be able to shift the unit direct to OD & back without a clutch, by matching engine rpm to driveshaft rpm -- not something for beginners. I doubt very many could do the same in & out of "grannie", although I learned to double-clutch into "grannie" at a roll from my Dad. He would also double-clutch in & out of low range on a transfer case while rolling.
Recently made a trip to the LA area down I-5.
GCW just under 12000.
Pulled the steepest portion of the Grapevine in 4th under (1.24/1).
2500 RPM, 6-PSI Manifold, 875-degrees F, 53-MPH.
U.S. routes and Interstates are supposed to not be greater than 6 % grade. There are portions of the grapevine that seem a bit steeper.
Attempted to upload installation photos into album '7231-2' but got security token violation error. Will try again later.
Acheda, would love to see photos and specs of the 6600.
I am about to wake that thread up and get to work on the installation. I will document with pics and answer any questions I can. The Roadranger is sort of off-topic for this thread as it is the opposite of a "Brownie".
A little old two-speed Brownie like the one my Dad had would have been great with my current NP-540 five-speed, but they all seem to have gone to transmission heaven. The Spicer boxes would work too, but I have the Roadranger and have now decided that I need to get it installed.
Hey guys. I'm now to the forums but not to Ford trucks. I've got a Ford F250 with a 6.9 diesel. It originally had a C6 but last summer I swapped in a T18 from an F150 with the intention to use an old DNE2 box for overdrive. This proved to be impossible to do without fabricating some custom adapters due to the 2WD T18's long output shaft. I'm strongly thinking about trying to find a 5531 or 5831 and selling the Doug Nash box since I've already signed up for some custom work with any type of overdrive behind my T18. The newer ZF 5 and ZF 6 are not appealing to me I want to keep the T18 with the granny gear and like the stronger old style box and the simplicity of the thing. The brownies are apparently becoming harder to find. If anyone has any leads or has one they want to unload I may be interested. Thanks for the good resources. I can be reached at jdkl81@_remove me first_ufl.edu
Have tried to upload 7231 B installation pictures into old (7231-1 )and new album ( 7231-2 ) numerous times with failure every atempt.
Haven't found the contact system administrator button as of yet.
Will keep trying. It would be nice to know how to delete those empty photo albums.
I had not up-loaded pics to my albums in a long time and found that I also could not add them to either an old album or a newly-created album. I am on a Mac and do not think I am doing anything wrong. I used a photohost and linked pics successfully in another thread. If anyone knows what is going on, I have no problem with posting help in this thread.
P.S.: One thought is that there are now limits on gallery size and maybe we are over the limit. I do not get an error message -- just small "?" icons.
Read about my 7231 installation into an 86 F-250 with 6.9.
Forget the 5000 series. They leak, aren't very strong and are very hard to find parts for. The 7000 series are quite plentiful, strong, hold oil and mine is pleasantly quiet. Don't know what part of the country your in but if your in the West contact Acme/Transmission shop/John in Stockton California.
800.545.2263 Have not had much luck uploading pictures of the finished installation. My first album, '7231-1' may give you a starting point.
Like I said in an earlier posting, I really wanted 4th over, 4th direct and 4th under for mountain towing. It has worked out really well.
