I have beenin the minority before.
When I think I am right I will say so till the cows come home.
I mean no offence to any member who has a different openion than I and I am not gonna do any name calling.
If we all thought the same, we would still be living in caves.

You didn't mean any offense when you said that you were going to type slow so I could understand? Ok - glad we got that cleared up then.

Now explain where this backward force is coming from.

Think waaaay back to Wolfie's analogy of the hovercraft:

It is designed to float on a cushion of air (ie, free spinning wheels) and to be able to move upstream (ie, a conveyor belt) on that cushion of air, regardless of how fast the current (conveyor belt) is moving in the opposite direction.

The fly in the cab of the truck going 65mph was a good one. rep

Ponder this; what would happen if the plane came in for a landing, on a conveyor belt that was going exactly as fast, in reverse, as the plane was moving forward.

According to the disbelievers logic, the plane would instantly come to a dead stop.

Very good point! The amazing thing is now that I understand it, no matter how hard I try, I just can't un-see it.

While the people on this plane were waiting to see if they would ever take off, they were served some beverages. One guy got a glass of water with a large ice cube floating in it. The glass was so full, that not one more drop of water would fit, without spilling.

During the long wait, the air conditioner stopped working, causing the ice cube to melt (it would have melted any way, but I gotta hurry in case the plane takes off). What happens to the water level in the glass as the ice completely melts?

Will go down due to air that is traped in the ice.

I'm thinking it will go up and overflow because some of the ice cube will be over the top rim of the glass, but the density also changes so maybe it will stay the same and not go up or down... hmm, scratches head.

hmm,

the density of the ice cube should be consistent throught the whole ice cube so, I believe the water level will remain at the top of the glass.

Remember, water EXPANDS when frozen....as it melts, I would think it would take up less space.

It does expand, that's why the ice will be floating above the top of the glass.

The ice floats, because it (the water in the ice cube) has expanded, and the density of the cube is less than that of the water. Objects that float displace an amount of water equal in weight to the object. However, objects that don't float (the melted water from the cube) displace an amount af water equal to their volume.

Ice cubes or not. The conveyor can be rotating the aircraft tires at 200 miles an hour. And If the plain is somehow held stationary. The Plane will not fly. But it may well blow a tire or brg.
