What would be the best and simplest way to get a new vin tag for the door. I am in the process of reworking my '64 and have come to notice that my vin tag from the door isnt there. I have a good clean title, can i just take that to the DMV?
No that won't work. There are companies that make the tags and they are actually called DATA Plates. Marti Motors in AZ made mine it came back with new rivets & everything for under $50 if I recall right. . . .
Interesting, I have never seen one on the crossmember - all the ones I have seen are on the passenger side frame rail, one just ahead of the crossmember, and one under the cab.
HMmm? I have yet to see Ford vehicle ID on the engine X-Member either. All the ones I have & have seen here, are on the right side frame rail like BP66 says.
When you order a "replacement" Data Plate generated most licensed producers req' a Photo copy of your title or paperwork to validate the Serial or VIN number you want to use. It protects them by law, so they don't stamp out bogus Data Plates/ Data Plates with Bogus Numbers.
Here in the BiKiNi StAte they want to see it on door, which is worthless because Ford plates say Warranty Data Plate right on them and are not legit VIN or S/N Tags. . .
In my case I used my 66 Serial Number & 79 ID numbers for 460, C-5, 9"x 3.00:1 rear etc. etc. etc. then I numbered the replacement 79 frame to match the 66 S/N, and kept the original salvage "Bill of Sale" for a "Replacement Ford Truck Chassis" I bought to "repair" my 66- F-100 Truck. It's all legal here, I can't speak for other jurisdictions however. . . . . But in my case ll the ###'s match each other and by the79 Manual they're all correct for how the thing is constructed (by me). . . . .
Bill, I am gonna have to join the others, I have only seen them on top of the passenger side frame rail in two places, about where the front axle crosses under and under the cab.
I have learned to never say never when it comes to Ford trucks, but that is news to me.
-Some good (new to me) info here. I've been looking for VIN in all the wrong places. An earlier post mentioned "the top of the passenger side frame rail behind the axle"...and I mis-interpreted this as REAR axle...which I gave up on after not finding it and concluding it must be on the VERY top of the frame rail facing the underside of the bed (only visible after removing the bed).
So now I'll restart the hunt: Front crossmember below crank pulley, passenger frame rail ahead of cross member, under the cab (where?).
=> VOH, if you find a source for '66 door tags, please add it to this link. My driver's door had been replaced at somepoint in the past and is carrying a '64VIN. This doesn't match my title. I just bought the truck and haven't registered it yet...but want to have everything set up so that the authorities won't question things.
Look the only difference between a 66 & 67 data plate is the size and the color. . . . Unless you plan to show your truck at Pebble Beach in the Gran' Concours D'elegance show nobody will know or nobody will care except the law & the Tag Office folks and they don't have a clue which is a 66 or a 67 or a 70 for that matter. They only care it has the correct Serial Number or VIN on it. . . . It's far better to have one regardless of the year style it is than not have one at all. . . . .
I have a 79 style Data Plate on my 66 only thing that's 66 is my body, rest of whole truck is more like a 73-79 AND it has the 66 numbers just as my frame does.
