I've got a 77 F250 with replacement VIN tags issued by the State of California riveted on the door jamb, and on the passenger side of frame rail next to the engine. I'd like to find out what the original VIN was if possible. Did Ford put the VIN anywhere else in '77? My '79 has a tag screwed to the middle of the firewall, but the '77 has no tag or screw holes in this location.
Results for VIN#: X25JKX87271 Model Year: 77
Series: F250 - 4x2 Super Cab Pickup
Engine: 8 Cyl, 460ci (7.5L) 4bbl
Assembly Plant: Kansas City
Transmission: No code selected
Front Axle: No code selected
Rear Axle: No code selected
Thanks for the decode. This VIN came from the "California Replacement VIN Tag" on the door jamb. Seems to match the truck, ie it has a 460, it's a supercab etc. Not sure why the original Ford tag is missing, California says the truck is not a salvage, or recovered vehicle. Where the original tag should be located there are two about 1/4" holes in the door jamb. In '77 were the VIN tags riveted onto the door post? My '79 has a white plastic sticker with the VIN and other data printed on it on the door jamb. I can see how this could be lost, damaged etc. The '77 cab looks like it was probably stripped down and repainted inside and out, as the paint has very few signs of age or scratches.

When trucks are repainted, some guys remove the VIN plates and either lose them or can't find the correct rivets to re-install them. If for some reason the truck is either inspected by the DMV or law enforcement, a new plate will be issued.
Just on a hunch, look under the passenger seat where the springs are. Ford used to attach a copy of the build sheet there.
