I am looking to use the EEC IV computer and wiring harness from 90
Crown Vic in my 50 F1; need tips on how to get the EEC connector throught the firewall without cutting a huge opening in the firewall. Anyone done/got solutions?
I put an 89 5.0 in my 60. The harness requires drilling 2 3/4 holes and then cutting out between them so you have an oblong hole. The connector fits through & then there is a rubber boot which matches the hole. I don't know if your's is similiar? Anyway my thought is that most connectors come apart although you may need a special tool to unlock the pins or sockets from the connector body. Any Ford techs out there?
I cut the factory EFI grommet off of my harness and cut one 2" hole right in the center of the firewall. McMaster Carr sells some funny grommets that allow you to have a pretty big sheet metal hole but a fairly small pass through hole. I believe that the hole on my grommet is 1". I can't find them in their catalog so I will look for a part number tonight if your interested. I did a fair amount of rewiring to get all the engine wires to pass through the one hole that I cut. All the wires come through just below the intake which keeps the engine compartment real neat and clean. I believe there are pictures in my gallery of my motor installed and wired.
bememe - I thought of cutting a rectangular hole like the factory setup on the CV, then mount the EEC near driver kick panel. I've looked at dismantling the connector but looks fairly sealed to me.
Svooom - Brad, did you re-splice the wiring harness connector inside the cab to mate to the EEC ? I plan on removing unwanted wires to AC etc, to keep hole in firewall as small as possible.
Tip49,
I didn't need to resplice anything. The hole throught the firewall is just big enough to get the fuel injection connectors through then the grommet fills the gap. I eliminated everything that I didn't plan to use. I canned all the AC stuff and all the emissions stuff. The wiring get's pretty thin after all that is gone. The only wires that had to go a different route were the ones for the Mass air sensor. I routed them out the passanger floor then up through the inside of the fender well then though a grommet in the inner fender which enter the engine compartment directly under the mass air sensor. You really can't see the wires unless you look for them.
Are you mass air or speed density? If I were to do it again, I think I would go with speed density so I wouldn't have to deal with the mass air junk.
I put a 92 5.0 in my '56 and we did what bememe did, drilled out the oblong rectanglular hole so the factory grommet fits thru, and mounted the EEC behind the kickpanel. however, no room to put speakers in the kickpanel if you do this.
Hey Svoom,
Just curious what you did with the EGR and the purge canister. Is your EGR still connected to the intake? did you bypass it electrically ( they sell a resistor which fools the computer into thinking the EGR is hooked up) , or take away the vaccuum, so it stays closed all the time? And what did you do with with purge canister and the lines that go to and from it?
I posted some pictures of the Nissan springs mounted to the 50 Frame rails; fabricated front and rear mounting brackets to fit stock location on frame. Ride height drops about 2" as I recall. The MII front suspension lowers the front as well; I was able to use stock exhaust manifolds, and modified the driver side motor mount to allow steering to pass through; with Borgeson U-joint and bearing.
