inner coverq
Yeah, tonight would be fine; I have access to sheet metal at work that I have already cut to make glove box. It will end up being roughly :
9 3/4" W x 10" D x 6" H . I will be polished. Will post pics if it turns out.
I would cover the firewall metal with vinyl on the inner and sound deadening on the firewall side.

Nick;
I hear you on the oil patch; I get home next week after 14 days.
Thanks for the dimensions; I am going to use light gauge aluminum, roughly 24 - 26 ga which is fairly pliable. I am using same material for glove box and plan to bend that up later today.
I'll post pic if everything looks good.

Firewall inner cover revisited
I am re-thinking the material for the firewall cover, the aluminum is light weight but will dent. Like Ross' idea for more pliable/cost effective material; there is a PVC upholstery material I think.
I did fab the glove box, posted final product in my gallery under cab mods. Delaying install of same until I finish wiring interior.

My office moved and now I am almost next door to a pond liner supplier, I keep meaning to stop in but haven't made it. Will try again Monday!
Bobby and I went to a swap meet about a month ago and I picked up some carpet real cheap. It is hard to describe, but has almost no nap, yet feels soft. It is supposedly replacement for modern cars' carpet. Has an integral layer of stiff foam. It is more rigid than pond liner, but only 3/16" thick, might lay better. I bought it for my headliner but had thoughts of using it on the firewall. Unfortunately it isn't black, it's grey, and on the firewall it might be too bright.

I heard about some stuff used by upholsterers called Sintra ABS. It is available in sheets and apparently can be molded somewhat with a heat gun. If your interior is gutted, you could probably get a single piece in there and heat and mold it. Might be worth checking, but I think you'd want to cover it with some kind of material.
