Has anyone compared the ESOF on the Excursion to the Expedition Controltrac 4x4 system?? - My Expy is great in the snow/ice and off road, and is better in the auto 4x4 mode than in locked 4x4 - I just wondered if the Excursion I'm replacing it with will be as good in the snow??
I know this is old but Here is my issue
2003 F250 6.0 4x4 was not working. Transfer case shifts fine from 2h,4h, 4L with no issues. I just replaced the stock auto/manual hubs with the mile marker ones and 4x4 is still not catching. Any ideas?
thanks

Even with My warn hubs it takes at least one full rotation to come out of 4x4 but when I manually lock the front hubs it is instant. I'd bet that u have one hub that's not engaging. I had a similar issue with my warn hubs and replaced them in literally 15 mins. Lock both hubs and test the operation by jacking each side of the truck up. Turn the hub to lock and spin the tire by hand while watching to see if the axle turns. You can tell it's locked when you can physically see the "u- joint between the axle tube and hub spin. Unlock it and spin again.. See if it unlocks and the u-joint no longer turns. If you have one hub that won't engage u may have a hub failure, maybe the components are dirty or sticking and need to be greased. If one is failing to engage you won't have 4x4 because the differential will attempt to turn the freest hub so to speak.
ok, i will try that in a bit. With the truck on the ground and the hub in the free position I can turn the axle shaft by hand and when I lock the hub I can no longer turn it.
Thanks
Hmmm. If you can not turn the axle it's locked. I can turn my axle u-joints freely although it's not super easy with the hubs unlocked. Lock em with the wheels on the ground and you can't turn em. You may have a failure further up the drive line. With the hubs unlocked and the transfer case in 2h u should be able to turn the 4x4 drive shaft. Put it in 4h shaft should not turn even with hubs unlocked. Now switch hubs to lock... In 2h shaft shouldn't turn because the hubs are locked.. If u go into 4h and u can still turn the shaft you have an issue in the transfer case or the actuator. If you have it in 2h with hubs locked, and can turn the drive shaft, problem is either the hubs, a hub, or maybe the pinion failed which I highly doubt. Another thing to think about is those 4x4 ujoints. May need to be changed. I just did mine.. These drivelines are not complicated, but can be a pain. A week spring in ur hub can be the culprit... And check your work, my warn hubs only go in correctly one way..
I just jacked up the front of my truck. Transfer case in in 4H, both of the new mile marker hubs are in the locked pos. The u joint on the axle shaft turns when I spin the tire. It does not spin when in the free pos. Since both front tires are off the ground shouldnt the front drive shaft turn as well? There is a faint clicking noise coming from the front differential when I spin wheels with locked hubs.
Thanks
I just did all the tests and the only one that came back bad was,
In 2H and hubs locked I can turn my front driveshaft and I hear clicking from the differential. Does that sound like a pinion issue to you?
Pull your hubs off. Should only take a few mins. Now spin your drive shaft. Any clicking? Turn the aXles.. Any clicking? If u have them in free and can not turn your drive shaft or axles but CAN turn them when they are locked something is wrong in your hubs. It does not sound like a Pinion issue. I think the issue lies in your hub kits. You may have installed them wrong.
When your hubs are unlocked your entire front axle should be free. Axles should turn, drive shaft should turn, tires should spin with out axles turning.
Locked in 2h wheels should spin and turn axle. Turn the drive shaft it maybe hard but it should turn one wheel or both.

The front driveshaft will only turn if you turn both wheels at the same time in the locked position and a faint clicking is nothing to worry about and it's definitely not the pinion gear. If the 4wd is not working and both hubs are working well, the front shaft is turning, it could be a broken spider gear but that is rare. You would know if the pinion gear lost teeth, it would make a horrendous noise.

Ok, I have all 4 wheels off the ground. I started the truck, locked the hubs and put it in 4H.
Front drive shaft spins, both left and right front axle shafts do not turn. There is a loud vibration coming from the front differential.
Any thoughts?
