Although a relative newbie at 7 years, 5 months, I am a U. S. Class I railroad employee presently serving as a Locomotive Engineer (1.5 years in that capacity). I work for one of those that split up CONRAIL .
Like BEECHBM69 says, the companies would like to operate trains through your backyards and across your highwaysby remote control (via satellite communications) with either no operator (engineer), or simply an "emergency brake handle puller" in case something goes wrong. You probably won't see that happen soon, but it WILL happen eventually.
Consider that the bulk of our "HAZ-MAT" travels by rail:
*Think of dozens of tank car loads of propane, chlorine, acids, bases, alcohols, not to mention the really BAD stuff like explosives, radioactives, deadly poisons.
**Now think of a radio controlled machine whisking that stuff across the landscape at 50-60 m.p.h.!
***You decide whether the railroads need to "save" the costs of our present "two-man" crews. (sorry ladies, "two-person" is too cumbersome...you're doing what was traditionally a man's work, so live with being called a 'man' once in a while. remember when 'man' or 'manned' was the same as 'staff' or 'staffed'? that's how I'm using the word.)

I don't think I every responded to this thread.
Here it goes.
I'm an Accounting Coordinator. I do many different things, but the biggest bulk of my job is paying the bills for a multi-million dollar company. Makes me wish I had an unlimited personal checking account like they do. Just to give you an idea, my light bill for one month, for one of the facilities is over $500K, and that is with a discount for paying ASAP.
