By day: GIS Specialist for waste industry company. Handle computerized truck routing for a tri-state area (south). Super low pay behind a desk 40 a week. Some travel to nice locations, paid for.
By night: Web Site Developer (http://www.aiimedia.com). Freelancing for 5 years now but don't make much. Studying too much and not working enough. Ready to send my resume out to other companies for career change.
I started out drafting for a machine shop on an old release 12 Dos version of AutoCAD when I was 17. I eventually ended up doing 3D Machinery layouts, re-fits and retrofits, a lot of field work using a laptop and a pharro measuring arm. I started designing trusses at 19 for a big manufacturer in AR, and did that for 3 years, I ran a small truss plant in GA for 2 years, everything from design and sales to maintenance... and now I design light gauge steel trusses and draw house plans on the side. And I'm 26...you can do whatever you want if you set your mind to it. I would like to have my mechanical engineering degree before I'm 30, then I can put my resume in at NASA (just a dream) I'll admit I had to BS's my way into most of the early jobs... but if you can learn fast no one will ever know
I design vehicles for Homeland Defense, scanning vehicles that see all the bad stuff bad people try to get into the good ol' U.S. of A. through shipping containers, these baby's scan right through 10 inches of steel to see everything from drugs to hidden compartments. I design and build my own trailers, and I have my own drafting service business with my wife. Half finished college, have a bunch of 'certificates', but certs and a buck will get you a cup of coffee anywhere. I get ahead by good ol' common sense & acquired knowledge. There's nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it.
Wow, alot of interesting trades represented. I am just a boring Accountant that sets behind a desk, wishing I was doing something else, like playing golf.
