2.9 swap for 302

2.9 swap for 302
I have an 86 ranger w/ 2.9 EFI and want to replace it with a carberated 302 out of an 82 ford. I was wondering how hard it would be to do this swap. I know about wireing and such. I was wondering what tranny would be good to run I prefer manual. It is 2 wheel drive. I also plan on putting a 9" rear from a mustang under it.

You can use a T5 but it is cable pulled. It it much easier to convert it to hydraulic slave and use a stock ranger clutch set up. For a 2wd the t5 is what you want for a stick, for an auto C4 or AOD. You won't need a 9in. If you drive like an old man the stock 7.5 will be fine. A Ranger 8.8 is bolt on and plenty strong enough for what you are doing.
Hogwild...you can do that but do you need to pass emissions? If so you won't be allowed to do it. If you want to do it there are a few things you need to do. If you have an in-tank low pressure pump you can use that and remove the inline high pressure, or regulate the stock system with a return regulator to around 6psi. Add a carb and intake and a duraspark will be easiest to wire up. If it were me I would keep the fuel injection.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:

I've done this a few times, one 302, one supercharged 351W. Hooker makes a swap kit, that has mounts and headers. It is available from Summit Racing. You will need a bigger better radiator from a V8 Explorer at least.
I used C4 Transmissions... much easier and stronger than a T5 to put in. Both of mine have performance built 8.8 rears.
