How hard is it, and what should my monetary expectaitions be to swap a 5 speed and a manual transfer case in place of automatic stuff. It's on an '88 2.9L High and Low 4WD
Also, I have read a lot of nasty things about the 2.9L would anybody suggest swapping it for a 302 or a 4.0L?
Personelly I like the 2.9, if yours is running good then I would suggest keeping it. If it is not so good I would suggest the 4.0 as the better choice.
As far as the tranny swap, it took me about days to get mine swapped. I swapped my a4ld out to a FM146 5 speed. The FM146 is the same length as the a4ld. Check out the technical information, under drivetrain, article a4ld to FM146, post in this forum and a link to my swap is there. Total cost for my swap was around $500, that included the clutch and brake pedal, the tranny, pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel.
$500 eh? that doesn't sound too bad. (heh heh, that's how much I paid for this thing in the first place) I think though, that it would be worth it for the more reliable and funner to use transmision.
My 2.9L isn't running real great, it leaks oil into the cylinders and has a hard time gaining power. I'm sure that a nice overhaul could fix the problem. Is it better to do that (overhaul) than to get a nice, brand-new engine? What's the price difference?
p.s. What did you mean to write?
