i have an 89 bronco 2 with 2.9 and 5 speed tranny. will a 302 bolt straight to this transmission? i would like to put in a 302 with minimal money and work. any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
One man's opinion - don't try to do a 302 swap on the cheap - you won't be happy with it and you'll be constantly breaking some driveline component or other that wasn't intended for the increased power and torque.
If you take your time and identify all the pieces you want to use, you can find a lot of real bargains out there ebay can be a treasure trove if you are patient.
Fast, cheap and reliable; pick two of the three. You'll be changing the transmission. A v8 swap can be done for $1500 if you have the tools, sources, know where to get parts and time. If you want new/ newer parts you'll be spending more money. Do you want a automatic or stick? That will determine a few things. You can keep the stock t-case with adapters but it usually will be cheaper to use a fullsize case and have the driveshafts made to fit.
simple. find a explorer that has a manual trans with a 5.0 and take the whole thing, then you have the elect harness & puter and all. including the exhaust system. If ya get the right year that 5.0 would have the GT-40 heads too. just my 2 cents.
Keep Em' Twistin'! Bob B.
Twistin is referring to the 1996 to 2001 Explorer 5.0L - makes it easier in some ways - more involved in others. For one, the oil pan and pickup have to be swapped for a dual sump or after-market.
James Duff Enterprises has all the parts for the swap and as everyone else said, if your swapping in a V8 it's pretty much mandatory to change the tranny. And while your underneath there I would say swap to a 9 inch as well, but keep in mind most 9 inches have a 5.5x5 bolt pattern.
