P1405 DPFE Upstream Hose Off Or Plugged

P1405 DPFE Upstream Hose Off Or Plugged

This is the code I got when my check engine light came on. It hasn't come back on since we cleared it.

Anybody have any ideas what the heck this means?

It's a 98 Explorer Sport 4.0 Auto, 180,000 interstate miles and this is the first time the check engine light has come on. Engine doesn't use a drop of oil and I'm shooting for 300K.

Thanks in advance for the help!

It will be back. I assume you checked the hoses which can get cracks. This is a pretty precarious job measuring exhaust pressure. I just had to replace mine at 150K. Cleaned the sensor ports and I thought that had fixed it. 1300 mles later it was back. Might as well replace it now and get better performance under load. It controls the EGR valve based on what it thinks the flow is. If that is wrong, performance suffers.

Yes, the DPFE its a small metal(if its orginal) or black plastic. They changed to plastic b/c the metal was corroding out. Delta Pressure Force Exhaust Sensor, it measures and evaluates what the EGR Valve is doing, or what i believe the change in pressure is...which correlates to something in the EGR system

with the 4.0 OHV, its mounted on the side of the intake with two bolts, two hoses (one big one small, yes size matters here) and a wiring harness. i dont a have a diagram to post, but its obvious.
If its the 5.0 its on the back of the intake, and a HUGE PITA. I can tell you how change it but then id have to kill myself by reliving the memories.
i dont know where it would be on the SOHC 4.0 but again: Two mounting bolts, two hoses, one wiring harness. Ill give it out of five

Thumbs up

Many thanks for the info. It never ceases to amaze me how informative and helpful this forum and it's users are!

Some time back I had a problem with my Ranger that had stumped many minds for nearly a year. Posted the info and within 2 days someone posted a suggestion that corrected the problem.

nhfire77, I hate to be responsible for pushing you over the edge.... But I have the P0401 on my 2000 5.0 explorer. I have removed and checked the EGR valve all looks ok there. I've been surfing the forum for info and the DPFE sensor looks to be the next piece to check. I've got a Haynes manual but it only has pics for the 4.0. I found this thread and hope you might help me on how to locate and replace the DPFE sensor.

yea i can

You need to get the bolts that mount the DPFE loose. I forget the size (11mm?) Then disconnect the harness and two hoses. The haynes manual tells you to mark them b/c they are different size, i say replace them both its an extra 2$, and the size difference is great enough that you cant screw it up, if you take your time.

As for getting the bolts loose i used a flexible stubby 1/4" drive wrench. Or a knuckle socket, or a angled T handle wrench. You can get what you need at sears. There is a black metal plate that part of the EGR system mounts to that the bolts also go through(its between the DPFE sensor and the intake housing) You can just leave that where it is, it will not fall away.

Oh remove the hoses and the wiring plug before loosening the bolts, its a pain if you dont. Remove the drivers side bolt first you can get to it by standing at the driver side compartment. Oh yea removing the elbow first would make it easier, but is much more involved

Its that simple to remove, then you have to mess around to get the bolt through the DPFE sensor and the black back plate into the bolt holes on the intake-this takes take and patience

any questions

nhfire77, Thank you for your informative reply. I replaced the DPFE this morning and it went well. The bolts on the DPFE were 7mm, the 1/4 knuckle socket worked perfect. Replacing the hoses makes the job much easier as the old ones are cooked onto the metal. The old metal DPFE was corroded in the larger tube. I've cleared the codes, hope this takes care of the problem. Just wanted to say thanks and that this is the best place to find answers for your explorers ailments
