Those life rating sound pretty conservative. I've had silverstars in my for about a year, and I'm sure I have 300-400 hours on them, 99% low beam. I do a fair bit of night driving.
I have an 01 Maxima that I use for business and I bought the Silverstars for the car last year. They do appear a little brighter, but only after 1 year (and 35k miles) both lights burned out. I would not recommend them to anyone because you are paying almost 3X the price of stock lights and from my experience, they're not durable.
I installed the 9005s in my fogs. I think they were $37 at Wally World. Are they brighter than stock, yes. Huge difference, no. I wish I had something a bit more intense.
Has anyone noticed the life of the various bulbs? I was going to buy the Silverstars until I looked on Sylvania's website and noticed that the life in hours for the low beam is only 150 and the high beam is only 90. Their stock replacement headlights are rated at 500 hours for low beam and 250 for high beam. I couldn't justify paying three times more for a bulb that is going to blow 3 times quicker even though it is brighter. What's everyone else's thoughts?
It makes sense when you think about it. Given a constant power consumption (same watts) a brighter light (more lumens) generally means a thinner filament. So, we'd expect the "long life" version of this bulb to be dimmer as well. And at the other extreme, remember the old flash bulbs? They had a mile of filament, burned very bright, but lasted only for a flash.
I'm with you, 100 hours is nothing and I don't want to replace bulbs that often.
Anyone had experience with the Silverstars or Philips HighVis in conjunction with the BriteBox mod? I'm waiting for both products to become available for my '05, but would like to know how the BriteBox may affect the filament life in these bulbs.
aircheck, they say that running the high wattage bulbs with the Brite Box can burn out the wiring harness or sockets. I just went the route of Silverstars, suv light harness, diode in the light socket. Wow, what a difference. I run my high beams with my low beams at the same time, very white and alot of light. I think the consensus is to update the wiring harness so that you can utilize the hight watt bulbs and Brite Box.
do you mean apc headlights. there has been a lot of people complaining about them. the light isnt as bright, the plastic turns "dirty" (yellowish) and they arent as bright as the silverstars.
jbm also has a conversion kit for 99-04 superduty's to 05 headlights. it just came out and costs $345. some guys have done it already without this cut but it required cutting the fibergalss backing for the headlights.
