I still believe that the internal structure of the 6.0l motor is sound and durable. But the computer side of this thing is another story. With all the pollution guidelines in place for future diesel motors including the 6.0 thats where the rub is. I sure miss the days when all you had on a diesel truck was a injector pump, throttle cable and a solenoid to turn the fuel on and off. Simple and relaible. Those days are gone. When the E.P.A made tough restrictions on carbureated gas motors in the early to mid 80's. The carbureaters had so many valves and add ons to them the engines never did run properly. What a nightmare. Than fuel injection came along which solved that problem. Ill bet if you could take the computer and all the restrictions off this motor it would be just fine. Ill bet in time this 6.0 motor.will be perfected and will be as good as the 7.3.
The trouble is its a learning experience for ford as well as the dealer. This mileage thing is bit of a puzzle though. Some people get good mileage and others get terrible I wonder what causes that. Hats off to the dealer. What a tough spot they are in. Yet its not ther fault at all. There the ones that get the static and are supposed to have all the answers. To all the 6.0 owners out there keep responding if you have had no problems and tell us the mileage youare getting. Thanks.
I wonder if the oil level in the engine effects the mpg, I think I will run mine 2 quarts low next oil change and see if it makes a difference it should reduce the foaming.
Me too but they fill it to the top of dip stick just wonder if that is causing the oil to foam and inturn the injectors dont work as well just a thought.
2300 miles no problems bought with 380mi
had in to tweak front end {slight pull left}
avg 13-15mpg mixed driving seems better in town
just an opinion i love this truck and i've been a tried and true bowtie guy. it seems the internet can be a good and bad thing as i had heard about 6.0 problems before coming to this web sight and i thought i made a mistake in buying a ford. however as i said i love this truck and if i didn't know any better i would be always picking apart my truck and working myself into a frenzy
{i think many new oweners do that} also i am sorry for owners who are having trouble. i do think ford owes us an explanation and a fix for fuel miliage. ordered my predator and mac cold air kit today from Ken his combo pricing is the best and the lady i talked to was nice and knowlegeable.
thanks new member.
thanks. tell me do you have special exaust, gas temp gage or any other mods. im looking into taking my cat out to keep temps low on stock exaust. will be towing my 5th wheel in two weeks to NC any suggestions on predator settings 5th weighs about 10,000 loaded. thats the reason i am going to a better air unit to keep the turbo cooler.
Why do you need a better air unit? Are you talking about the air filter and intake? I have read much that the new 6.0L air filter is a large improvement over the 7.3 and that a retro fit (from Ford) is available for the 7.3L.
I have been told changing the air filter and intake would give Ford a reason to decline warrenty issues? The "chip" can be re-programmed, so no problem there. Many are doing CAT back systems, since removing the CAT can void your warrenty as well.
Obviously do what you want and what your comfortable with, but I urge you to read through the last six months of issues and threads before you spend money and possibly void your warrenty on a motor that may and will need every bit of the 100,000 mile coverage.

Dan,
I first had a straight exhaust (just took muffler out) for a while...
Sounded and ran great around town...
but actually got REAL loud after a few hours on the interstate in the Ex.... may be different in the SD's, but in the Ex the roar was just a little too much for me...
So got a turbo back exhaust from Quadzilla (local here in Ft Worth) for about $325... the sound and flow are 1000% better !!!
I am amazed that the stock downpipe flows at ALL the way it is crushed into there.... the new 3.5" to 4" downpipe looks like the grand canyon compared to it...
And I left the cat in... many have tested it and saw NO difference in temps or performance so put it back in... besides it is a FEDERAL law to have them... right or wrong - it's still a law that I chose to follow...
my bud, Choctaw Bob on here, has a new air intake and that's my next mod to balance out the intake with the exhaust....
(and stay ahead of him out at the drags )
I felt a slight difference when I took the 100 lb muffler off, felt a MONSTROUS diference with the Predator, and felt a substantial difference when I put on the turbo back...
